This book was unfortunately my first DNF ever. I managed to make it past the first few chapters of info-dumping and names of random cities and tribes and politics between said cities and tribes. I was looking forward to the romance part of the book, and vaguely knew it would be enemies to lovers, but then the "enemies" part lasted about 100 pages before they were suddenly making out, and there was literally no build up to the romance and I didn't care about either of the MCs one bit. The prose was severely lacking and it was really hard to stay focused on the book because it was quite boring - the dialogue is some of the most unnatural I've seen in any book, and it ruined the immersion because nobody converses in that way in real life. Even beyond the dialogue, some of the character interactions felt so angsty and juvenile (i.e., female MC shoving (what she thought) was a commoner in a foreign city against the wall and threatening to cut their neck? While she's on official duty as a representative of her kingdom and is a foreigner in this town? Why on earth would she do that?)
I think the premise of the book was definitely interesting and I think it had a lot of potential - politics in fantasy can be so fascinating when done properly, and enemies-to-lovers is usually a good time - but the way it was carried out was not satisfying in any regard. It basically felt like I was reading a book detailing the lives of NPCs in a video game - everything was dry, there was no tension, they all had weird behaviors and mannerisms. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'd rather read a different book.

I love this book!! I couldn’t put it down, if you are into enemies to lovers than this book is a must.
I didn’t realize this duo is related to a series that I haven’t read yet but I didn’t really find any issues in not reading them before hand. If you like the enemies to lovers trope, they’re already making out by page 100, I wish I could have seen them hate each other longer

You have to get through about 30% then it gets good. But if you don’t want a cliff hanger or want the book to be a sand alone. Don’t read the last chapter!! Overall this book was really good. I love a good enemies to lovers!
