I really felt like I went on an adventure with this one, every page advances the plot. The 2 main characters both believe that they are in the right and it’s written to constantly be switching side with who you agree with.
Already starting the second book, I don’t want to leave those characters alone with what I know is coming for them!

I’ve never gotten so much house cleaning done! I listened to this as an audiobook and found myself looking for chores to do just so that I’d have a reason to continue listening to this book! I loved The Kiss of Deception trilogy and knew I would love this one but it took me some time to get to this book.
I didn’t really have an interest in Kazi’s story after The Beauty of Darkness ended so I guess I just needed time to separate myself from that initial storyline and this one. I still remembered the characters from the first three books so when they were mentioned here, it was a sweet return, but I thoroughly enjoyed this new story within that first world.
The world building was perfectly done, there was just the right amount of action, adventure, and romance to keep me dying to know what happens next and I loved how the characters interacted. Many times I was smiling to myself or laughing out loud at what they did or said. I like that it didn’t end on a cliff hanger but that the story clearly isn’t over. I’m invested in the characters and the story enough that I want to know what happens next so I’m looking forward to reading book 2!
This book was a great, clean read I highly recommend to young adults and adults alike.

i didnt realize this book was a sequel to another series so a lot of the world building didnt make any sense to me. but i liked the game of thrones vibe with politics and spy stuff. very cute very fun to me. also the guy who is described as having greasy black hair, like yikes dude try shampoo
SOLID!!! A pretty solid read! I didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this! The characters are interesting, the plot is somewhat suspenseful, the writing is a good mix of cheesiness, poeticness, and descriptiveness, and of course, the romance was fabulous. Well, it was slightly fast-paced for my liking, but that's okay. The big ick I had is how confusing the first few chapters are. I've finished the book, but I'm still not entirely sure if the "ghosts" Kazi keeps talking about are real ghosts or just figures of speech. That, plus all the characters introduced, and the history given, made for a very confusing start. It did pick up from there, so alls well ends well I guess (and what a good ending it was).
Almost 5 stars, but not quite, so 4.5 it is.
EDIT: in retrospect, I think it’s more 4 stars than 4.5.

I really loved this. The characters were interesting, the plot was engaging, and the world building made for a fun fantasy backdrop.
Kazi and Jase were so good together. I liked that even though they kept lying and betraying each other, they just couldn’t help but keep loving each other. I hope that in the next book we’re able to just enjoy them being together without any more secrets between them. I feel like I might end up liking the second book more because the plot is thickening and they can finally work together instead of against each other. I need the Ballingers to forgive Kazi asap so she can have the family of her dreams. She deserves it!!
My favorite part was definitely when they were lost in the wilderness together. I think it lagged a little for me at certain points after that. Like a lot of lying to each other and keeping secrets. Sitting around the table eating dinner. And her looking for this guy around town. But I’m excited for the next book so we can figure out what’s really going on.
I do think that this book is incorrectly labeled as a heist book. What heist??? She was looking for some guy and she eventually found him. That is not a heist. She didn’t even end up getting away with him. They literally caught her and she took Jase hostage to get away. Heist where??

This book has been on my tbr for a while, I'm happy I finally got around to reading it! It has so many tropes that I love (enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, forced proximity, etc) and I really enjoyed Kazi's character.
I listened to this one as an audiobook and I'm honestly wondering if I would've connected more with the story if I had read it with my eyes. The story itself great! My issue is just that it felt like it dragged...
CW: Death, violence, kidnapping, trafficking, miscarriage, torture.
