*Spoiler-Free Review*
I got a little sick of the "pretty boy" routine, but I mostly enjoyed myself through this read, hence the four stars.
There is no denying that this is a high-paced, action-packed, adventure. I LOVED the mafia vibes coming off the Ballenger family, the black markets, thieving, all of it. The darker it got, the more I liked it!
My last comment will explain this one. The romance was a little stifling. I felt like it could have been utilized to further the plot, but instead, I felt like it held it back when romance became the focal point. When the romance was the subplot, it was very gratifying. I didn't hate the romance, I actually really enjoyed it, I just feel like it could have been better!
All in all, I did really enjoy this read. I binge-read it in 10 hours, after all. I think you should all give it is shot! Don't let the romance fool you, the plot is a good one.

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. My only qualm was how quickly the main couple kissed when they were in the wilderness. I wanted a little more tension. LOVED everything else though. The political landscape and world building was extremely well thought out.

Dance of Thieves was much more slower-paced than a lot of the books I’ve been reading recently, so it did take me awhile to get into. It is also quite a long book for the story it tells. The beginning is quite abrupt and the reader is thrown into things, so that combined with the slower narrative, did mean it took me longer to truly care for the characters. It also took me a bit of time to orient myself in this world and understand how all the characters were interconnected. (I have since read that this takes place in a previously established world of Pearson’s, which makes complete sense. This still can stand on its own, but I think the intended audience is really Remnant Chronicles fans. The beginning and world-building make so much more sense now.)
Once I was finally connected to the story and its characters, I really did enjoy the journey our characters went on. As this is a YA fantasy, I think this is something that I would have absolutely adored if I read it when I was younger, or even if I had read it closer to its 2018 release. As it stands, I did like both Kazi and Jase as characters and as a couple. There wasn’t as much slow-burn as I usually like in my enemies-to-lovers stories, but being on the run together (and the fact that it’s YA) will do that. It felt much more like insta-love to me, but I did love their little riddles. I was intrigued by their story and the overarching enemy, but it wasn’t a drop-everything type of investment.
I wanted to like this book because it was an og booktok book, but i just couldnt get into it and dnf’ed the second
i’d say 3.5 ⭐️
some of it was a bit predictable and honestly wish there was more purpose behind some of the decisions made by the characters—not just emotions running rampant all the time. they’re supposed to be “fearsome” but like ??? i didn’t get much of that from the ballengers anyways.
will i be reading the second book? duh! but sitting at a 3.5 right now with this one
