i think that the book made a good job of merging both the historical circumstances and the current events that underwent in the characters lives by underlining the subtile changes that Tokyo has known both by infrastructure and historically speaking , these aspects were shown in the book in such a magnificent way and it all merges in so neatly in the end. the book makes you want to reread the first half after acquiring knowledge of the past , present and the future. the book started off as a coming of age story and navigated the feelings and train of thoughts of of our main character, and even then natsume has showed such a deep understanding of the human soul and the complexities of the human heart , which was very apparent and deeply rooted in his writing through many scenes , the loneliness of a young adult that switches to an unwavering obsession with a familiar yet particular face of a man at the beach , the little quarels where one vehemently defend his ideologies through little things , annoyance and pleasure , but surtout curiosity, this is what Sensei was to our main character .for sensei , the main character was a vessel , a new era , a mirror of his long lost youth and naivety, senseis response to mc earnest attemps to get closer was also very realistic.
about the ending ,i think that it was in fact necessary for sensei to die , his era has indeed ended , everything that hinted of his past was long lost , the deads are dead and those who remember the deads moved on yet his sin remains inchanged if not intensified.
By foreshadowing , we knew the fates of many characters but when the revelation finally reached its climax , one can't help but feel greatly shocked even if it was nothing to be surprised about.
Side notes about the general who decided to follow his Lord, I think that it makes absolute sense because really, what else is left for him in life when he's devoted his entire life to the spirit of meiji , one cannot follow to the next era just like that especially when he actively built the one that preceded. this is what he ought to do and I think that it makes a lot of sense for him to decide to die. The way that it impacted sensei was truly brilliant. Through his road to suicide it felt like K's train of thoughts merged with his and revealed themselves before us readers through the lenses and actions of sensei.
in the end it's really difficult to say that he was wrong or that is it was truly his fault that his friend died but one cannot wash away his hands from such a thing so easily , its is something that he deserves in a way. In conclusion, everybody got the ending that they shouldve had. This is the kind of work that sits with you , its wisdom doesn't automatically pours on you , it comes gradually, slowly but surely.

Yes, yes, yes! I came across this and was intrigued by the simple premise of it; a student admires his sensei, but the sensei has a dark past which the student does not know of, a time comes when he must confess that which nobody knows. Ominous I know, but when you start it the drama doesn’t seem to match. Yet when you finish it, you’ve been on a ride you never expected. The tragedy of the pages will have you eagerly anticipating what happens next. I understand why this is a classic of Japanese literature, I do not see this book ever becoming something that is left in the past.
