Fine, I guess. Mostly skimmed the back half.

Adele has escaped to LA, vowing to never return to Ireland after her acting career fell apart, but when she gets a call in the night from an unknown number to act in a new horror movie where no one will know she’s in the country, the offer is too good to refuse! However, once she gets on set the horror start to get a little too realistic.

Run Time is an exciting thriller and I found the parallels of the script, the book within the script and the story itself a very interesting concept. I felt it took a little while to get into the story however it certainly picked up in the final half, there were a lot of twists (or reveals) that I hadn’t anticipated in both the script and the story itself. I felt the motives could have been stronger within the story, however it was a very fun read and I’d be interested in reading more of Catherine Ryan Howard’s work.

Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I was such a fan of horror flicks when I was growing up.  They scared the bejesus out of me.  And don’t get me started on a book in a book, so this one was the best combination of a few things I like.  There was a book and a screen play all inside this book.

It took me a little while to get used to the format and understand what is going on, but once I did, I found the setup clever.  An actress with some past issues was hired last minute to act in this film.  It’s based on a book and as the filming starts it seems to be playing out in real life.  Of course there is a remote location and a maybe unreliable narrator with very poor cell service.

It is very atmospheric and I could really feel the location and the tension.  At one point I was thinking Blair Witch Project.  It does move a little slow, so it required me to pay attention.  Especially since there were a lot of narrators and I solely listened to this one.

Speaking of narrators, there is a full cast bringing to life the many levels of this one.  Alana Kerr Collins, Alan Smyth, Gary Furlong, Gerard Doyle, Siobhan Waring, and Alison McKenna do a good job of bringing the story to life and ratcheting up the tension.

If you are looking for a good horror listen that doesn’t get too gory, this should be on your radar.

This was just okay for me. RUN TIME is as meta as can be when actress Adele signs on to make a horror movie about a woman who's reading a book and the events of the horror novel start to happen to her. In the movie script. And then these things start happening to Adele.

Because of the repetition of plot, it was all just okay for me! The repetition didn't really bother me like I would expect it would have, but I felt like it was hard to keep the pacing and the plot moving forward. We had to repeat scenes, one happening to the book character then to the movie script character and then happening to Adele, so the same concept got repeated three times in some spots. It was kind of interesting but ended up just really taking forever.

The ending was... fine. Nothing for me to go crazy over. A little complicated and unnecessary, but okay. It was all just okay in every way, but I still had a fine time reading it. I never felt like putting it down or quitting, so it wasn't a bad read but not one I could go out and recommend and aside from the concept, not one that I'll keep thinking about in the future. Gorgeous cover, though.
