Has your apple watch ever reminded you to relax while reading? Because mine did. My heart was flying as fast as I was through the pages of Run Time. As The Liar’s Girl is one of my all-time favorite thrillers, when Howard had a new thriller release, I jumped. While the ultimate reveal and motive was lack luster, the thrill was intense. I can’t remember the last time I went to bed a little scared of the dark after finishing my nightly chapters.

“Lights
Feeling her stardom fading, struggling soap-actress Adele Rafferty is ready to give up on her dreams when she gets a last-minute offer to play the lead in upcoming horror film Final Draft. Could this be her big break? Will she have redemption for what happened the last time she was on a film set? Adele doesn’t think twice before signing the dotted line.
Camera
Adele quickly makes her way to set, deep into the isolated and wintry woods of West Cork, Ireland, miles away from civilization and cell service.
Action
When real life on set starts to somehow mirror the sinister events portrayed in the script, Adele fears the real horror lies off the page. Isolated and unsure who in the crew she can trust, is there anywhere or any time left to run?”

A mind bending combo of a book within a film within a book. Twists popping up from everywhere with plenty of humour and fun to match.

Full review to come.

This was a fun and original plot. I’ll start with that. An actress joins a quiet movie set and discovers everything is not what it appears. I struggled to relate to Adele’s choices in the book. I think that was my struggle reading this book. If there was danger, I would have barricaded myself in my cabin and waited til daylight! My favorite parts of this book was the political intrigue of the movie set cast and crew, and least was the running through the forest bits. I loved the meta book plot point and it really made this a quick read!

I read this book with Thrillers by the Bookclub SoCal!

Great premise, but this book failed to deliver. It DRAGGED. And there was no tension for a HORROR book.

Listened to audio. Another Catherine Ryan Howard hit! Fast paced and psychological thriller effects kept me turning pages and wondering what was going to happen.

The author’s latest novel starts off with a bang. A movie is being filmed in a remote Irish countryside, and down-on-her-luck Adele has been cast as the star. Once there, the script seems to be unfolding in real life.

There was an early part of this that seemed far-fetched. Adele was on a soap opera for 14 years and in at least one movie. Within a year of giving up acting in Ireland, she comes across as penniless because she took a front desk job at a hotel. But I know the author used to have that job, so maybe she wanted it in there for that reason.

Aside from that, it was easy to be pulled into the story. The settings are atmospheric. Ryan Howard writes her characters well, particularly the early chapters of Adele, and I enjoyed the script as well as the novel itself. I listened to this one, and it’s a full cast production, which works really well.

The novel started losing steam for me at about 2/3 through. The repetition of the script and novel, the hijinks, my patience was starting to wear thin. And the “who” and “why” seemed anti-climatic.

If you’re a fan of Ryan Howard, check this one out, and I recommend the audiobook.
