OMG, like totally boring. That was a waste of time.

My son enjoyed it enough but I thought it was such a bore. Theo is so unlikable, such a self righteous know it all, that I wasn’t interested at all. Also, sorry to say because I do love his writing, but this book is written way too dumbed down. Yes it’s for kids, but if the Harry Potter series have taught us anything, is that kids can read good writing and will love it. This is such simple writing, it evokes zero feelings or excitement or intrigue. It was also so slow. I was going to do the series as a buddy read but we are both not interested in continuing from here.

Disappointing. Some authors who primarily write for adults who try to write for children do so very well. This is an example of when they fail miserably. Theodore Boone is more of an adult than his own parents.

couldn't stand it. oh well.

Felt like there were missing pieces. If this was the first in the series there were too many references to things from the past that I felt like I should have known.
The relationship between Ike and Theo's parents?
How Theo got Judge?
The scandalous trial that Theo watched from above?

3 peanut butter cookies.

Cover Love: I like the composition and the colors, but I don't like the illustration of Theodore.

Why I Wanted to Read This:
I am always on the lookout for middle grade mysteries for my library, plus it's John Grisham.

I Kept Reading Because: I wanted to see how it all worked out.

Romance?: No

What I Liked (& Didn't):
I liked Theodore. He wasn't a super popular kid but he was well liked and sought out by his classmates. It was great to read about a middle grade boy who knows exactly what he wants to do and is taking active steps towards accomplishing that goal. In this way, he is a good role model for young readers.

Fun young adult book read by Richard Thomas. Wish Ben had discovered these books when he was younger-he would have loved them.

I thought this was a really good teen murder mystery book.

It's hard to dislike this book because of Grisham's clearly excellent writing ability - but Teddy Boone's story is lacking on multiple fronts.
- Grisham needs to brush up on modern kids. The idea that no one has electronics was plainly wrong even in 2010. And the thought that other kids would want to come to their classmate for legal advice - no matter the reputation - is far-fetched.
- [SPOILER] The ending is terrible. Ending a legal story in a mistrial is an awful idea. There was a complete lack of suspense as to how this would end. Of course Judge Gantry played the thoughtful card. Theo should have disliked Gantry to make this a more suspenseful ending. The mistrial is a mistake either way.
- Two characters/plots with no reason. April and Omar. April seemed like a lame attempt to add a friend/young female to the story. I have no idea who April is. Omar's plot line fell flat. Where was the conclusion to his plan to follow them at the end?! That went nowhere. It felt like finding a grammatical error.

Overall, Theodore is a generally likable character and the plot moves at a reasonable pace. But the more I look into this story, the more I realize where it fell short.
