I absolutely could not put this book down. It’s been so long since I’ve read a story that kept me up at night, wanting to continue to read and turn pages. I was not expecting the ending, and I am someone who prides myself on putting together the puzzle before the end of the book. I also look for plot holes and thought I had caught a couple of them, but at the end of the book I felt like it wrapped up the way it needed to make sense.

This book isn’t perfect, I wish that there was more detail in the events and the dialogue to help build the world and the relationships more. Sometimes it would seem that big events would happen in a paragraph, but I really wanted more. There are also times where small events happened that really turned out to be a big plot that could’ve been highlighted more.

Loved the world, the plot, the mystery, the love story and the twist.

Realistically, this is 4 1/2 stars for me. If you’re not a pretentious reader, it’s a good story and not too complicated.

Also I’m 100% #TeamGrim. (Can we bring back the twilight era hashtags?)

*edit. I know nothing about Acotar. This book is way less hunger games but with vibes faintly of twilight for sure.

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t necessarily read this in good faith. I decided to read 4 TikTok fantasy books, and this one has been called the worst of the worst, so I gave it a try.

And I was extremely pleasantly surprised. I didn’t love the writing, didn’t quite adore the characters, but the fantasy aspects and the world building, even the romance, is pretty damn good!

This is one of the better fantasy books on TikTok, and while I won’t be continuing the series, I can honestly say I had a good time with this!

I honestly thought this book was going to be terrible based off of what I heard on Tiktok. I bought it when I listened to Alex Aster talk about it when it was first published. I recently was in a reading/listening slump and decided to give it a go. I am SOOO happy that I did. This book was so fun and like a mashup of so many of my favorite books. Great, fun fantasy that didn't make me think too hard.

If Isla (or any of the characters) had a personality I might have enjoyed it more, but alas…

I freaking loved this book, and the writing. It was such an enjoyable young adult novel. I loved the different dynamics of the characters, the back story, the different groups of rulers and their people. It was all so fascinating that it drew me in completely. I hate that I probably have to wait so long for the second book, but I am overjoyed that I got to go on this ride. I worried that it would be too much like the hunger games, but this was absolutely different. The centennial wasn’t for sport or entertainment, it was for survival. There were so many twists and turns that I enjoyed, so much originality and the main character was actually fun to follow. She was truly a dynamic character full of promise and flaws. I loved her! I am curious to see where the story will develop further.
