This book could have used another round of editing. Or maybe three. So much of it felt completely random and like the author was just following whatever felt like the most interesting idea at the time with no actual plan of what she wanted to happen. Isla doesn't know how to use the starstick except for when she does. The love interests are irredeemable assholes except when they aren't. Isla is both extremely capable and wildly incompetent depending on what suits the scene.

I mostly kept reading to see what other insane scenarios the author would come up with and yeah. It was all silly. A lot of the world building was flat and uninspired. I would skip over this one and will not be following the rest of the series.

okay, i really thought for the majority that i wasn’t enjoying the book HOWEVER i think i was just in a reading slump after ‘the queen of nothing.’ i’ve heard so many reviews that say the last 30 pages are insane and OHMYGOD they were so right. my jaw was dropping. i was SOBBING. the plot twists were actually good?? like there’s a bit where everything list slots into place for the reader the same time it does for isla and it was so good. i think my family thought i was having an aneurysm.

criticisms:
- one thing was SO predictable. no spoilers but literally from the page this one thing was introduced i KNEW it was shady. idk if it was written with the intention of being predicable but i sincerely doubt it.
- the names were stupid man. i suppose they went with the realms the characters were from but c’mon. grim the ruler of the dark night realm? snore fest. isla crown, princess raised on an island? shut up man. CELESTE FROM THE MOON REALM? SPARE ME GOD.
-there’s one thing that was revealed toward the end that threw me off because i’m not sure how it was executed in the wider plot? maybe the sequel will explain but it did confuse me.

ultimately, i think if i wasn’t reeling from ‘the queen of nothing’ then i’d have enjoyed it more. last 30 pages changed my life as everyone warned. thank you for reading TED talk.
