Tries to be a lot of things at once: an adventure travel diary, a history of Peru, a stand-up comedy routine. Sort of succeeds. Sometimes it felt scattered, and I was annoyed at the shifts in tone. Sometimes I LOLed. Overall, it was OK.
I picked this up after a month-long communion with Nature which SHOOK MY VERY FOUNDATIONS; this did not scratch that itch. I presume The Snow Leopard will? Onto the Himalayas!

I really enjoyed this one. It's super informationally dense and definitely not a page turner. I probably wouldn't have finished it if I wasn't fascinated by Machu Picchu. But I am. I read it slowly, taking it a chapter at a time. I skimmed parts that were boring. All that said, I still really really liked it. I've never read a book in this genre before, and it was fun to try something new.

It's 100% possible that this review is biased by my recent visit, but I loved Adams' account of his explorations of Machu Picchu and the other surrounding Inca ruins in Peru. As a journalist, his style is engaging and entertaining while still informative. He's not a one-sided story teller; he shares differing views of the location(s) and what they could mean. This was a fascinating way to get to know the Incas. Adams has done loads of research, and compacted it together into a highly enjoyable read. A must-read for anyone who has or is planning to hike the Inca trail!!
A great story - in the vein of Bill Bryson - about the author's trek to the famed Macchu Picchu. Fun to read and full of great historical tales.
