The most difficult part about this book was getting used to the lack of quotation marks. Once I got used to that, it flowed much more seamlessly.

Absolutely harrowing book. It reads like a thriller as you are unsure of what (or who) will be around the next corner.

I appreciated the dichotomy of the “good guys”. The father and son claimed to be the good guys, but in order to survive had to resort to bad guys behavior. In a post-apocalyptic world can values such as goodness really even exist?

This book held me on the edge of my seat, and I was certainly rooting for them the entire time.

The writing can be intellectual at times in a way that feels almost out of place with the setting and the standard writing style.

Jesus Christ, guys. Can I get a damn break? I keep reading bad fucking books. It's hard enough that it's hot as hell in Florida right now, but I can't even read a good book? This book is literally just someone saying fancy and big words to feel important and meaningful. There are a few good quotes (hence the 1 star rating) but a lot of the quotes that are almost good just fall short because they're written in a way that is hard for the reader to understand. I will never read this book again. I hated it. Before I finish this review, let me talk about my biggest gripe. WHY THE FUCK AREN'T YOU USING QUOTATION MARKS? YOU WON A GODDAMN PULITZER PRIZE FOR THIS DOGSHIT, CONFUSING (maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't think so) BOOK AND YOU DIDN'T USE A SINGLE QUOTATION MARK? I WENT THROUGH THE BOOK AS I WAS READING AND ADDED MY OWN! IT'S ONE IF THE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF GRAMMAR! QUOTATION MARKS HAVE A PURPOSE! I can feel my heart rate rising so I'm done talking about this now.

It took me a moment to adapt to McCarthy’s style. Initially I found the lack of punctuation challenging but I soon grew to appreciate that the flow and page structure made the pacing so perfect.

Bleak, tender, and so moving. I found myself re-reading sentences just to let them sink in and linger. I loved the openness of the boy and papa’s protectionism, both thinking that they are being the strong one, both dangerous in different ways. There are of course terrifying parallels with today’s world but there are also lessons in the parent-child dynamic. How to handle honesty and lies when the child looks to you as the beacon of knowledge. What to answer him when your truth is hopeless? How to protect his future when you fear there may be none?
