challenging funny informative lighthearted fast-paced

As a short book this didn't go into very much detail for any of the topics and I thought it jumped around a bit haphazardly, consequently it didn't feel very much like a "guided tour". The thing I enjoyed most was the author's enthusiasm which was clear throughout.

I always find these introductory books enjoyable even when they're not particularly standout. I often find that they aren't as well suited for a general audience as they claim but better serve early level maths students or hobbyists.

I tend to enjoy seeing how different authors demonstrate the same concepts and there were a few examples in this one that I hadn't seen before but many are well known and widely used.

If Steven Strogatz can't make you fall in love with mathematics, then probably nobody can. I have never studied math after my school but recently my curiosity got better of me and I've been reading about different math and science topics. That is when I stumbled upon this book. In this book, the author strives to communicate what mathematics is about to a set of people who might be otherwise intimidated by the very name of 'math'. The book is divided into six sections - Numbers, Relationships, Shapes, Change, Data and “Frontiers. Strogatz’s writing style and use of visuals and anecdotes makes the book very interesting. Each chapter is very short and about a particular topic of mathematics. He covers so much of the basic ethos of the topics like algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, probability etc. often by stressing upon intuition and visualization. It’s a great book for the curious mind.

Jude loaned this to me - LOVED it!

The writer made this book so anyone, even those who fear math, can read it and enjoy it. He starts at the basics: addition, and manages to go all the way to the various levels of infinity. If you are curious about math but hated it in school, this might be the book for you.
