A very exciting story that I would normally love however it has a few issues that are personal peeves of mine for these kinds of stories.

First some good stuff:
1 - Both MCs are tough cookies in their own ways. No one is a pushover. Marisol is a badass without a doubt but it was good to see that Sloane was more than just a damsel in distress, she definitely has a backbone.
2 - The storyline is interesting and even though Marisol is a morally grey character, you can sympathize with where she is coming from and she works by an honor code that most people could agree with - especially if you like a good anti-hero.

My peeves (spoiler alert)
Spoiler
torture porn - like seriously, there is a large portion of the book where one character is getting the shit beat out of them. punching, cattleprod, baseball bat, knives. It's a lot. I don't mind my hero's getting roughed up a bit but this was a bit too much for me.

ick sex - for me this is sex that takes place when characters are filthy. for example, after being tortured, housed in unsanitary/filthy conditions, sweaty, dirty, bruised, and bloody. not enough to eat or drink for a few days. no soap, no hand washing, no shower, no toothbrush. Sounds super sexy right? That's a no for me dog.

inappropriate lust - ie. feeling lusty while hanging from a meathook by your bound wrists. Just doesn't work for me. YMMV.

Even with my peeves, will I read the next book? Probably. Is this book in the same realm as, say, Requiem for Immortals? IMO, no. It's still a good book, but it had too many places where I was rolling my eyes to be a great book.

Well this was a lot of fun given the plot lol. There's a lot of action and while that's normally not my thing, I liked it here.

The thing that brought it down for me was their "I love you's" after a weekend together 10 years ago and then a day or two back together. I really wish that hadn't happened. Also an unsanitary sex scene kinda lost me too. It just didn't feel like a good time to be doing that...in my opinion. LOL.

On to the sequel!

I loved this story! Two bass-ass women on different sides of the law! There are many things about this book that I love. The action, the love story, the main characters flaws and there strengths. The author did a great job making me care for and root for a criminal :-) (reminds me of how a feel about Cain Casey :-) )Marisol has had a hard life and decisions she's made and continues to make are a result of all the losses she's had to endure. I was very invested in Marisol and Sabrina's relationship and continued to have hope for them. I'd like to know a bit more about Sabrina's backstory. I can't wait to see what will happen next! Looking forward to reading book 2.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bella Books for the digital galley of this book.

I may have slept on this one (it came out in October), but I was fully awake while devouring it, that’s for sure. Marisol Soltero has had a tough life, and the criminal underground is the only place she belongs. She rules over the nightclubs and shadier side of Chicago as The Queen of Humboldt with her pick of women. Sabrina Sloane has been cleaning up the streets her whole career, first as a DA and then as Governor of Illinois. During an assignation attempt, the two women’s lives cross paths, drudging up old memories and endangering the life Marisol has built for herself, that is, if they even make it out alive.

This book is everything I needed right now. I was looking for something engaging and escapist. This book moves at a million miles per hour with plenty of action and romantic tension. With hints of enemies-to-lovers and the-one-that-got-away mixed with high stakes and espionage, I was hooked. When I finished it, I said out loud, “Aw, man! It’s over? I want more.” Been a minute since a romance has captivated me so completely.

Don’t get me wrong, I usually enjoy them, but I don’t lose myself in them like I did this one. I don’t think I’ve read any of Shepard’s previous works, but I’ll definitely be seeking them out after this one. It definitely made a slow, boring workday go by a lot faster.
