The most annoying main character I’ve had to suffer through. That extra half star is for how all the creatures are depicted and that alone.

I have to note that the “I won’t bore you with the details” line after forcing the reader to read through the entire book and have every single detail about the MC’s body, outfits and nails told to us and then to give us that BS is the laziest of writing.

MacKayla Lane’s biggest worry seemed to be what to wear or what color to polish her nails until she finds out that her sister has been murdered. Since Alina was studying abroad in Ireland there are many phone calls from her father to find out if they can catch her killer. MacKayla, also called Mac, has a message on her phone from Alina that doesn't make a lot of sense, but makes Mac decide to go to Ireland. Once there she finds that she sees things that she couldn't possibly have seen. She is also looking for the Sinsar Dubh that Alina spoke of in her phone message. Mac finds herself at Barron's Books and Baubles and asking about this book. Jericho Barrons then begins to question her. As an uneasy alliance forms Jericho tells Mac that the only way she can live is if she trusts him, but that is not easy. I didn't like the ending of this book because now I have to read the second book to see what happens. It was a light read with just enough near death experiences to keep me on my toes.

Another DNF :/ I started off loving this book but about halfway in, I just stopped caring. I loved Mac at first but she became pretty annoying quickly. Barrons has all the personality of a doorknob. I can only read about the two of them going to different bad guy's houses (there's the modern art bad guy, the goth bad guy, and the mobster bad guy) for Mac to get objectified and come to a dead-end on their quest. Yawn. Next please.

Reread 11/2024. Much better the second time than the first! I loved this series, but really struggled with this book when I first read it.

Right so...that's me, I'm Basque, and I feel fucking insulted by this quote and by the fact it has 23 likes on this page. Will never be reading anything by this author who apparently has no idea what she's talking about anyway.
adventurous emotional lighthearted medium-paced

My~ what a busy mind you have there Miss Lane. The internal monologue is.. something. How she managed to think all that and still hold a conversation is beyond me.
This book got the Buffy vibes and I kinda love it.
I go back and forth with the ebook and audiobook. Narrator is alright for women voices but can't pull it off for males ones. I know book 4 onwards have duet narration so I'm hoping it will be more enjoyable.

Probably more like a 4.5 but rounding up because this was a true delight! Another reminder that I want to read more backlist books as this has perfect pacing & world building. I tend to get really restless when books have too much action, but at no point was I bored during this. The character development especially of the MMC was a bit lacking and there isn't really any romance, more hints of romance to come, but I do LOVE a slow burn so that's fine with me. All the 2006 details were nice & nostalgic as well.

A good introduction to the series. I stayed up until nearly 6am this morning to finish it, so it obviously did a good job of keeping my attention.
I originally found the MC rather unlikeable and annoying, I still don't like her, but at least I'm getting more invested in her welfare as the story progresses.
Plot, setting, characters etc are all interesting enough.. except the "death-by-sex fae" that just seemed a bit over the top and ridiculous.
