This was such a sweet book. It was reminiscent of Pollyanna or Anne of Green Gables. Julie Andrews is multi-talented it would seem. I good book for elementary school kids.

Mandy is a treasure! Of course, try being twelve and explaining to a priest that you chose “Rose” as your confirmation name because, when you were ten, you read a book about a lonely little girl who discovers a cottage in the woods and decides to fix it up. Mandy pilfers seeds from the orphanage and plants a beautiful English garden to call her very own.

“You don’t think ‘Mary’ or ‘Bernadette’ will suit you better?”

“No, I love flowers! The book of saints says Rose of Lima is the patron saint of gardeners?”

“Do you want to be a gardener, then?” I had no idea how to tell the priest what I’d realized: a children’s book about a garden had made me want to be a writer.

This gets four stars not because of how I felt about it today, but because I loved it so much when I was young. I enjoyed my most recent read-through, and though I don't fully understand why I read it three times when I was in 4th grade, I'm glad my younger self had such books to escape into during those important years.

I have always loved this book. This book is by far one of my favorite books and I am not sure why. It might be how sweet it is, or just the simplicity of it, but I love this book. This story has a very good idea and is executed very well. I almost get “The Little Princess” vibes from this story and its type of writing. I fell in love with this book the second I saw it, and re-fall in love with it every time I re read it.
I recommend this book to all age groups. It doesn’t matter if you’re 8 or 31, I’m pretty sure you’ll love this book (if it’s your style).

Sweet, and a well-written take on depression for children.
