I feel guilty giving less than 5 stars to a book that has been a hallmark of Christian doctrine for decades now, but there were several parts of it that irritated me because I felt like it was deliberately being as vague and impractical as possible. The theological insights were terrific, and I can see the importance of the book overall, but there was enough of those "okay, but what does that MEAN?" moments for me that I got annoyed with it. Maybe I'm at a stage of my life where I don't have patience for those kinds of things anymore.
Very deep and insightful. I read this mostly right after I had woken up, which I do not recommend, because this is very dense and hard to understand and I could only handle 2 pages at a time. But it really hammered home the truth that my righteousness does not come from anything I do, and as a recovering perfectionist, that is VERY important.
This is the first thing I have read that is theologically Lutheran. It is interesting, but not compelling. I'm glad I read it, but did not come away with much.
Bonhoeffer’s work on The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most profound collections of theology for today’s disciples.
This book took me a long time to read, primarily because I had to stop and think about the ideas presented. There is a great deal of truth in this book and I’m amazed at the depth of thought and spiritual insights from the author on how to be a follower of Christ.
Didn't love it as much this 2nd time around
This is definitely more pure "theology" than I gravitate towards (complete with lots of parenthetical Greek words and phrases) but lots and lots of good stuff here. I think my reading experience would have been much different were I not coming off of the big Metaxas biography of Bonhoeffer which gave a huge amount of context for his thoughts, his tone, his theology, his writing. This might have felt on the dry side to me but my brain was backfilling so much of Bonhoeffer's life and personality. Glad I read the book- lots to mull over.
Ik ben in dubio want het concept van goedkope genade is briljant, maar de hardvochtigheid van Bonhoeffer doet me denken aan de Dostojevski's Grootinquisiteur van Sevilla, die aan Jezus vraagt of het geloof niet enkel voor een paar uitverkorenen zijn. Waar het Christendom juist het menselijk tekort accepteert, lijkt Bonhoeffer hier niets dan het beste te eisen.
Maar is deze navolging haalbaar? Bonhoeffer zegt dat het niet ingewikkeld is. Maar zelfs hij gaat tegen zichzelf in (als ik het goed begrijp), aangezien hij deelnam aan een samenzwering om Hitler te doden. Ik zeg niet dat er geen theologische argumenten te zijn om Hitler vermoorden, maar Bonhoeffer spreekt zichzelf daarmee tegen.
Maar het eerste en laatste hoofdstuk zijn prachtig, en het is zeker een ontzagwekkend (en angstaanjagend) boek.

Bonhoeffer says nothing new, but in fact truths that are very old. In today’s Christian climate, these words must be heeded. In his simplicity, Bonhoeffer is calling the believer to a profound reality and this book serves as a test to each believer, making sure they are focusing on Christ and listening to his call to follow Him.
