Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a wonderful theological thinker. This book was very convicting and very challenging. I highly recommend it to anyone who hopes to live a Gospel-centered life. However, there are some chapters that seemed a little long-winded or confusing which is why this won't receive a full five stars from me.
The first section of this book was amazing. It was challenging and frankly, completely changed my view on a lot of things. The second section of this book was also challenging and informative. The third section of this book seemed almost like a totally different book. It was much more challenging to read. It was rich material, but not as easy of a read as the first two sections of the book.
Still a wonderful book and a highly recommended read.

Great content, hard/slow to get through to the end.
This was a really good book. Pretty much everything Bonhoeffer says is quality, although it sometimes takes a lot of brain power to process it. I particularly enjoyed the section on the sermon on the mount, good stuff!
I had to read a section of this for class. Still counting it.
If you believe, take the first step, it leads to Jesus Christ. If you don't believe, take the first step all the same, for you are bidden to take it.
Over-all really really good and worth the 20 bucks or whatever I spilled on this piece. That being said I took huge issue with a few chapters wherein Bonhoeffer tragically lowers the law to the point of spinning it off as something that believers can choose to be obedient to. We cannot. We don't live the law out in our lives because we need to, nor dare I say because we will be judged by it or find final salvation by it, but because we have a final and full salvation entirely in and through the work of Christ that began at the incarnation and ended at the cross. Small amounts of disagreement, however, don't render the benefit void. Bonhoeffer perfectly understands and beautifully articulates the doctrine of the church, of grace, of the mediation of Christ between man and man, and union with Christ. When Bonhoeffer gets something wrong he gets it really wrong. But when he gets something right it flows off the page with breathtaking elegance in a way that is striking and refreshing. There is some unforgettable writing in here. Ultimately, the cost of the discipleship I feel could have been pressed more. That is not external cost, but internal. It is the death of self, of the old Adam within us. If we lose sight of that and exchange it with a focus on external obedience to a law we can't obey we will be forever chasing a salvation that's already been finished and offered. Realize your self-destruction through the cross and become new men in THE new man, the incarnate God, Jesus Christ.
good on the whole but I nearly died from the use of masculine pronouns.
If you are a theologian, this book would be great for you. If you are interested in Bonhoeffer, but aren't up for the extreme complexity of this work (which has caused me to pull much of my hair out), then I would suggest "The Wisdom and Witness of Dietrich Bonhoeffer" by Wayne Floyd or "Radical Integrity: The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer" by Michael Van Dyke.
This is a book I borrowed from my sister and which I have wanted to read for a long time. It is one of the must-reads for any Christian. I picked this one up for two reasons- it was going to be read during Lent and I have a personal theme of M for March. As Deitrich Bonhoeffer was a martyr in the Second World War this was apt for my theme.
This is a book to be read slowly and digest each chapter. It is pretty dense and I had to read most chapters twice to get the flow and meaning. But even so I am sure that I have missed key points. And I anticipate re-reads in the future.
This is one of the few authors I wished I could speak more concerning this book. He talks about infant baptism briefly and wish he had placed the references and more about baptism.
Overall, I highly recommend this book. Be prepared to be gutted by the content, he speaks in a way which is rare these days, be prepared to rebuked about how you live and how you treat others but b prepared to see scripture in a new and compelling way. I think this book resonated more because the author was a martyr.
