I love the first half of this. I intend to go back to the second half at some point...but not right now. Too many things higher up on the list. I like Bonhoeffer's writing, his theology, his personal life story.

Actual Rating: 3.5 Stars

LOT to chew on here. Unfortunately, I stopped being able to swallow for probably the last 80 pages or so. The arguments became longer and more detailed - and maybe redundant? - and I got a little lost. Okay. A lot lost. The dated, more academic language didn't help.

But. Really enjoyed the beginning of the book and the exegesis of the Sermon on the Mount and Bonhoeffer's no nonsense take. It's not discipleship if it's easy, if you get to pick and choose what you abide by and which examples to follow.

So, I think it's worth a read, even just in pieces.

(ALSO: Dietrich Bonhoeffer is THE BADDEST bitch. Coming back to Germany to be a persistent thorn in the Nazis side, even though it ultimately got him killed?? Talk about walking the walk.)

There is certainly value to be had from reading this book. It is, however, incredibly dense at times. Some of the ideas, while so profound and interesting, would probably go over better with a modern audience if they were expressed a bit more concisely.

An author who refuses to water-down the gospel, ultimately walking his talk in his becoming a modern martyr. Bonhoeffer challenges the Christian to take Christ at his Word and not accommodate it to our comfortable lives, while adding new and deeper layers to familiar Scripture.

I take away the notion of costly grace, and various other mini-lessons from the Sermon on the Mount which Bonhoeffer commentates on with lucid and persuasive illustrations.

However, what finally takes away a star is how tiring it actually becomes to read the book towards the end. With various "mini-lessons" this book becomes one of taking up and putting down as there is little incentive to flow through the rather "separated" book. In addition, Bonhoeffer can become slightly too abstract and hard to understand.

Overall, a deeply enlightening book as a theoretical read and a call-to action, but sadly falls a bit flat towards the end.

A book that has changed my life and my faith. Bonhoeffer talks in depth about Jesus’ sermon on the Mount, and about the cost of being a true disciple of Jesus. I’ve never read a “Christian book” as convicting as this one. There is lots I still don’t understand, and it has taken me over 6 months to read. Bonhoeffer talks with severity and sincerity, and explains that grace is not cheap, but costly. I will come back to this text again, perhaps after I’ve read some of his other works.

Many good points/lessons....but repetitive and dry.
