So intense, beautifully written, beautifully narrated! I so excited to start act 2

Wow, it's been nearly ten years since I wrote the review below. I loved these comics in high school, and I clearly did a few years later too. I loved them enough that I carried my copies with me all these years. However, reading them now, the shine has worn off significantly. I'm just, really fucking over all the sexual violence in these stories. The horror and gore and violence just feel empty and unpleasant to read. We spent way too much time in the inner lives of shitty men. Parts of this I still liked and I'm going to go through with reading through the comic run to the end but I'm not having a great time overall. ETA reading on in the series has only made me retroactively dislike the beginning more. Currently on the third volume and only continuing out of stubbornness

2012 review: I am rereading the Sandman series for the first time since high school, and oh, how I love these comics. There is so much here that's discussed in terms of time and existence and mythology. Since I don't read other DC comics, I feel like there are a lot of little references that I miss, but the story still shines through, so much that I keep reading, even though I would normally avoid horror. If you do not know, there are some very strong horror themes here, and it can be very disturbing and gruesome at times, but if you can get past the chapter in the diner, I would say you can make it through the whole book, and that is very much worth doing.

Do you know what dreams are made of? No, I do not. In fact, little is known about dreams. I believe it's in this mystery that the Sandman has built it's kingdom.
The stories show fantastic portrait of the dream world, one which we all know and visit frequently, then it slips into reality, which can be so much more absurd... A decaying world where the sick arrogant people are worse than nightmares. In these comics - be prepared - you'll see ugly things. An awful lot of them is caused by mortal humans, some of them by other beings. All of them, though, feel strangely real, so be warned.

I am a huge fan of Gaiman and was so excited to see what a graphic novel by him would be like. I was not disappointed by the popular Sandman. Gaiman intertwines original and classic characters from history, mythology, and literature to tell a fascinating tale of dreams and reality.

An absolutely stunning edition that was almost a large-print edition, allowing the reader to see so much more detail in the art. I dropped the rating by one just because it's so large as to almost be unreadable: I felt like I needed a lectern for it. As it was, I could really only read it at the dining room table or while flopped on the living room floor.
