Really cute, action packed middle grade graphic novel. I was working in the children's library and one of the kids recommended it to me.

{My thoughts} – Emily and Navin lose their father in a terrible accident. Their mother moves them to a home that belonged to her family. The house is extremely run down and needs a lot of TLC but the family decides to clean it up and make it a more livable environment.

They start to hear a weird noise downstairs and the basement and their mom goes to investigate. They hear her scream and then they go down after her. They end up going through a door that takes them some place different. It takes awhile but soon they learn that there are a lot of creatures where they are that are not good creatures.

One of the creatures has their mom. They go in search of her and trying to save her. It leads them to a world and situation that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to them. They start to try and figure out what needs to be down in order to save their mom. They make some new friends on the way and try to figure out what they should do.

This is a book that is based around tragedy. The kids are forced to deal with the loss of their father. Then they are forced to deal with knowing their mom was taken by some strange creature. This book helps to show children that even though things seem bad, there is still a chance that things can potentially get better.

I think this book is a nice book and will make a great addition to any child’s library. Especially any child that enjoys reading graphic novels.

My eight-year-old son and I read this graphic novel together, and we both enjoyed it. There were some very dark and emotional moments, like the main character tragically losing her father in the first few pages (trigger warning 💔). But we enjoyed the artwork, the story line, the mystery, and the fun characters like talking animals and robots. We are anxious to check out the second book in the series so that we can see what happens next. We give this book four robots. 🤖🤖🤖🤖

Following the death of her father, Emily and her brother (Navin) and mother move to an old family home in the country. While deep cleaning the house, Emily discovers her great-grandpa Silas' library and a magical amulet. That night, the family hears something in the basement, and Emily's mother is swallowed up by a terrifying creature. Emily and Navin follow the creature and end up in an alternate universe, where they meet Silas and his robots, learn more about the amulet, and attempt to save their mother.

A fast-paced fantasy/adventure for older elementary- and middle-grade students.

This graphic novel opens with one of the most frightening and heartbreaking car accidents I have ever seen textually or graphically rendered, which gives you a pretty good idea right off that this isn’t your typical comic book or YA fantasy fare. It’s also got tentacle monsters and a cool steampunky vibe. I only wish it weren’t so slight: this is just volume one, which means reading it is kind of like watching the pilot for a new TV show…and then not getting to see episode two for months and months and months. (And then only for an additional $15 or whatever—how does anybody afford these things?)

But this is definitely a series with promise. I hope I get to continue with it.
