I basically read this book because I wanted to learn the whole picture after reading the first one but it felt like a chore (much like finishing the previous one). I don't really like how it's written, it feels like it wants to be different and more "complex" and it's really not. The story basically follows Kyoshi messing up and there's not much else to it honestly. I liked seeing Kuruk but it didn't match what we know about him (what about his wife and the face thief spirit?). It was interesting to learn more about fire nation's politics but that was pretty much it. Rangi didn't get much character development and the friends she made in the other book are barely in this one. I also feel like this is such a short window on Kyoshi's life who lived more than two hundred years and it really didn't satisfy much the need I had to learn more about her. I won't be giving the other books a chance.

The first Kyoshi novel felt like an entire season of a show while the second novel felt like one or two episodes. I enjoyed this book but the story and complexity of the plot took a dip compared to the first novel. It was good for wrapping up the cliff hangers we were left on but I don’t feel like it added much else especially in terms of character development.

Interestingly, instead of disliking the story or the character(s), I just don’t like the way it was narrated.
I don’t like that Kyoshi was failing over and over again.
For me, there’s much more than mistakes to learn from.
Anyway, I wish I could read more of Kyoshi and I’m looking forward to seeing the new adaptations from Avatar Studios.

Having read the Yangchen duology and the first Kyoshi book, it looks like this series is following the same pattern as the other one, and the continuation was much weaker than the first book in that case. I've totally lost interest in this sequel and don't think it will deliver what was promised. The author centers the antihero's story in ways I don't like or think fits the narrative. And I wanted a much longer timeline covered in these novels -- instead it focuses on one struggle early on in each Avatar's journey, and drags it out for 2 books. They could have covered something much more interesting in this Avatar's journey because she lived for 300 years lol. I'm disappointed and not wasting any more of my time on these.

Started May 6th, 2024. DNF'd May 30th, 2024.
