I definitely felt myself more pulled to the further back in time storyline so I found myself skimming a bit of the other storyline. It just felt like there was a bit more detail there that didn’t seem needed. However, I did like the storyline. I like had some intrigue it had some romance. I think all in all the storyline was there, but I wish there was just a little bit more connectivity between where it ended and where it started.
This book just had my number. Two storylines, strong narrators and set in NY public library, a place I find utterly magical and awe inspiring. It kept me up way too late trying to finish and solve the mystery. That being said there was 1 storyline I really didn't like but overall because of how invested I was it's a winner for me!
I loved everything about this book! The pieces of history in each timeline; the inner monologue of two women trying to figure out life; the mystery; the plot twists.
I love reading books by this author as she does so much research about the buildings that she focuses her stories in. I love the way she is able to make up tales from the past and the near present that eventually come together. So this one seemed a little far-fetched. Additionally, one of the protagonist, Laura, annoyed me some. It was almost as though her selfishness made her foolish. She’s really the only reason that I am not giving the book five stars. Laura’s storyline took on too many avenues. Having said all that, Davis’ writing is smooth and easy but not simple. I look forward to my next book of hers.
I was not expecting to like this so much after my mom abandoned it partway through. I think I loved the dual narratives (the first was in 1913, the second follows her granddaughter in 1993) and that it was set around the New York Public Library. I had trouble setting it down so I could focus on other tasks!
This book ticked all my boxes on paper -- history of NYC, libraries, rare book thefts, dual timeline historical fiction. However, something with the writing fell flat for me, can't quite put my finger on it, but I never fully felt invested in the characters and some of the plot points felt a bit predictable.
Quick read, with a fast-moving plot and plenty of intrigue. The characters didn’t really capture my heart and felt... off? But still, an enjoyable read. Thanks so much to my local librarian for picking this as one of two “blind date” reads for our summer reading challenge! I definitely wouldn’t have picked it up on my own.
I like that Fiona Davis's books are incredibly detailed and feature interesting women. This books was easy to read and I loved the characters. The only reason it doesn't get more stars is because there was a certain depth missing for me.
Fast-paced read set in the New York Public Library, told both in contemporary times and when the building first opened.
