Loved this backstory so much! Gave me more context and was a fun glimpse into the lives and minds of other characters.

Meh... I think it's just coz I haven't read the main books yet and got used to how this whole system works... there was literally no world-building... ig coz most would have already read book 1... oh well...

I also didn't like how their one goal was just getting the guy... I mean that just sounds so off... like something that happened a hundred-odd years ago not something post-apocalyptic... It was basically a non-swoony romance that was mildly interesting... I guess it's just because I don't know any of these characters yet properly and how the whole thing works - I should have read book 1 first!

I love Kiera Cass and this was just a wonderful addition to the books. I am anxious for the new novel and the novella The Favorite. Can't wait to read more of her work! As this is a novella, I decided there's really not too much else to talk about!

I feel...disappointed.
Idk I already finished reading The Selection & The Elite & I really liked the queen Amberly in it. She was such an elegant character in those books. When people talked about her, how she was a four, but ended up being a queen, it was nice to read it. She had such an impact. I was curious to know her love story.
Her romance development with Clarkson felt like a Wattpad story written by a 12 year old. But let's be honest, everyone sounds stupid when they're young & in love so let's forget about it. But the main reason she was loved as a queen was not only because she was elegant. Being a queen, acting like a one, being independent, taking decisions, owning up to them & all those qualities were the reason. But here she's just the "If you tell me to stand with one leg, I'll happily stand with one leg until I die" type of person. Yes I understand Clarkson was like an idol to her cuz she's used to seeing him on the TV & fangirling over him but GURL you should have some dignity.
Also Clarkson drives me mad. Out of all the reasons he likes her for what?
Cuz she does whatever he wants, doesn't oppose him & he can use her the way she wants? That's some pathetic shit right there.

I kinda wish I didn't read this, so the queen Amberly would remain as a legend in mind. I'm just disappointed now.

hmm

okay, nice. better than i originally expected, at any rate. i don't really like any of the characters in the book per se; i can't identify with amberly and don't even get me started on clarkson, that lying disgusting pathetic piece of abusive trash. htf does he think he is i hATE him i don't care he lived in a turbulent household, he has 000 right to HIT his own child, his own son, that two shit piece of crap disgusting pathetic moronic loser. screw him. ignoring *his* existence in this book however, it's a nice book, not particularly amazing though.

I am so happy that other character are getting their minutes of fame. I was always curious about the Queen, about her role and how she got to win the Selection games.

In this book we find out all about that. And it was a nice trip. Unlike the previous selection books with America, there isn't much rebelling going on (only one event), so that was a change. It was all easy and calm.

Amberly (or the queen), I am not sure, I loved her, but I also didn't like her (confusing I know). I found her way too weak and blurgh. The constant headaches and pains just got in the way of more romance with the future king. I know they serve a goal and that it was a way to show that our future king didn't care about her illnesses but sorry, it was just too much. I didn't feel sorry for her, I felt annoyed. Especially since she just gave up after hearing a certain thing (which, sure I can imagine would break your heart and all that, but just keep fighting for a dream, maybe you won't win, maybe everything falls apart, but you need to keep fighting and hoping).

I did like our future king (more than in the previous books). I am not sure what happened in between stuff, but sorry, it seems he became exactly like his mom and dad. Something he didn't want to become in this book. It is a shame that he lost that battle.

I didn't like the king and queen in this book. Dear Lord, those two. Especially that queen. She is an absolute terror and nightmare. Hitting, kicking, smacking, throwing people away. Sorry, but I disliked her soooo much.

There was enough romance, though I didn't really feel the connection between Amberly and the future king. It felt more like a pity thing than true romance.

All in all, I am not sure if I would recommend this. Again, it was fun, it had good moments, but the romance just was bland, there was too much whining and too little romance and selection moments.

I liked this prequel, I thought it was a nice touch at the beginning to really get some explanation of these sweet characters!
