Excellent narrator. I have a fondness for books with a trainee and an an experienced detective and this one hit the spot.

This was a free Kindle Unlimited book that I picked up. It is a British police procedural book with an accidental death investigation due to some suspicious findings. It was good enough - especially for free, but I was bored.

Liked the character of DC Smith very much. Much better than I actually liked the mystery of this, because I thought stuff was kind of pulled out of a hat without much of a chance for the reader to figure it out as well. That said, though, I would like to read on in the series because I really liked how the author let things just unfold, without filling in the backstory so much - which I find to be a failing in so many "first in a series" books. You can let the reader get to know the folks a little at a time.

DS Smith of Kings Lake police in Norfolk is asked to review the apparently accidental drowning of a 17 year old.
A trainee detective - Waters - is assigned to work with him as they begin to determine the truth.

A young man on an outing with friends dives into the river to follow a canoe. He goes around the bend and his body is located the next day along the shore. At first glance it appears to be an accidental drowning, but a couple of things bother the pathologist and DS Smith (ex-DCI Smith who to confuse things more, is called by his first initials DC.) There was a bruise on the boy's head that suspiciously seemed to match the engraving on paddles rented by a canoe rental agency that had had a canoe stolen.
Grainger has written a really good police procedural with just the right amount of sardonic humor reminiscent of RD Wingfield's Frost series. I am adding Grainger to my list.

I enjoyed this, even though it lacks any sense of urgency. It’s entertaining and presented no challenges.

Listened to the audiobook, which is a very pleasant listen both of the narrator and the narrative.
DS Smith proves that the old methods of being a police detective work just as well in the new world—a notebook, an eye for detail, a nose for what is ever-so-slightly out of the ordinary that leads to bigger and bigger things.

I finished listening to AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH minutes ago and I would struggle to give you a summary of the story line. I did not find it engaging.
This book was apparently first published in 2013 but for my personal tastes, it has not aged well. The mystery and investigation was lacklustre, the pacing of the story telling felt uneven and I have no idea what I was meant to think about DC Smith; his personality was all over the place.
Gildart Jackson narrated the version I listened to. His voice was clear and crisp but that's about it. The narration often swayed between robotic and a documentary voice-over.
