A fairly light crime novel. Easy reading but let down by the ending.

What a fortunate discovery this book series is !!!

A straight forward, exceptional police procedural. No drama, no internal chatter, no repetition, full of dry, sarcastic replies delivered with a "straight face" that significantly increased the delight in reading this book while laughing out loud a few good times!!

DCI Smith, an well seasoned detective with massive experience and laser sharp brains, an acute attention to details and an excellent chess player as he successfully anticipates other people's movements.

The other aspect that I've thoroughly enjoyed in this book is the language used, the replies. The DCI Smith talks in an elegant, disguised way, yet he clearly communicates everything he needs to say and his words never miss their target. Such a treat to read this book!!!

The second best thing after discovering a new book, is discovering is part of a series!!!

On to the next one!

3.5 stars…loved the characters and enjoyed listening to the story. I was a bit thrown off by the format because you learn a bunch of details near the end instead of having them all wrapped up as you move towards the resolution.

One of those nice quiet investigation stories with likeable complex characters with a sense of humour.

Just when I thought I'd exhausted the well of brilliant police procedurals ... along comes DC Smith!

My first time reading this author, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. The story was well written with characters that I liked very much and humor throughout.

DC (nickname) is a British detective on the cusp of retirement but he takes a voluntary demotion in rank. He wants to get back out into the field. DC is exceptional at what he does in the murder squad. He has an ability to see possible in what others look over. He also has the ability and willingness to mess with superior’s mentally. He is full on witty comments and banters with his teammates.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and will read more in this series. The mentor/green kid duo of Smith & Waters has been done before, sure, but it is very well handled here. And it isn't often that you have a police procedural where it's not even clear if there has been a crime at all.

My only complaint would be that my Kindle version was sometimes oddly formatted, with a lot of white space.
