Crawl is an wesome short story with many WTF moments that left me terrorized at the end. Throw in a dash of Lorn's typical humor and you've got yourself a winner.

A couple whose marriage is in a state of crisis gets into a horrible car cash and Juliet winds up nailed to a post in the woods. She manages to get free but has to crawl for her life from the thing roaming the woods...

I'm going to take a detour before I get into the meat of the review. Most of us have been spammed by authors, an approach that never works. I'm much more likely to become interested in a writer's work if they also display their love of reading. When Edward Lorn put out the call to read this ARC on Booklikes, I jumped at the chance since he's demonstrated he's a writer that still loves to read. I was not disappointed.

You know that when the horrific car accident is just part of the setup in a horror story, you're on to something good. Crawl is a tale of desperation and survival, both of a couple's dying marriage and a woman trying to get away from a supernatural horror on a pair of shredded feet.

Since it's a novelette, that's all I'm going to divulge about the plot. Edward Lorn's writing is polished and chilling, like Robert McCammon or a young Stephen King. Juliet was a great character and her struggles were powerful, both with forgiving her husband and trying not to be torn apart. My feet stung in sympathy for her.

I can't help but think that, for me, the best thing about testing the waters over at Booklikes was that it lead to me discovering Edward Lorn. Four out of five stars.

This was creepy and I did mostly like it, but I think I missed something. Maybe my brain will figure it out later, maybe not. Still, a solid 3 stars isn't bad.

While creepy in its own account, I do not consider this short story to be one of my favourites by Edward Lorn.

In the ruins of their marriage Colton drives Juliet to her mother. But as they thought their luck was already running low, it might be time to think again. For soon Juliet finds herself nailed to a post and the only thing she can do to save herself is crawl.

The first part was really good. Anticipation was there all along and I was really waiting for something to happen. It could have lasted longer, as the tension was rising. I think the story would have worked better as a longer story. Because also the second part, the real horror felt a bit rushed and the ending too open for my liking. As this is usually the case with short stories, I blame it on the format.

I think I got this novella for free some time ago, but I really can't remember the details.

The author kindly gifted me a copy of this ebook. A review, good or bad, was not expected, nor given, in return.

23/1 - I didn't want this to end. I wanted to know more about what happened to Colton, how the crash happened - was it the priest or purely an accident - who the red-haired boy was and what the hell he was doing on the OUTSIDE of the truck (and more). I loved the priest (in the way that you love a great horror character), very creepy, as soon as Juliet bumped into him I was disturbed and I got the feeling that I had while watching the movie Wolf Creek (an Australian horror movie loosely, vaguely based on a RL Australian serial killer - Ivan Milat) - a sense of creeping dread, of being hunted and herded towards my death (well, not mine, the characters', but you know what I mean) and no matter which road I take he's expecting it and waiting for me. You can't escape because, somehow he knows what you're going to do and where you're going to run and he doesn't have to run after you because he'll get you in the end, no matter what (it's making my palms sweat and my heart race just writing about it).

To the author: Can there be sequels?

Highly recommended for lovers of fear induced sweaty palms and erratic heart beats.

It's hard for me to write a detailed review of a short story without giving too much away. I will just say Edward Lorn has done it again.
An unhappy couple are about to separate. Perhaps that separation would have been temporary, or perhaps this trip would have led to eventual divorce, had it not been interrupted by the horror they encounter during their travels. A quick and creepy read.
