Light and easy, a great palate cleanser after a lot of heavy books lately. Recommended for those who enjoyed Practical Magic.

I love Sarah Addison Allen, but I didn't enjoy this one of hers as much. It was still enjoyable, but definitely not as captivating as her others.

What a wonderful continuation of my favorite Addison characters! Its nice to se ehow everyone's stories wrap up!

Sarah Addison Allen writes the most beautiful prose and incorporates magical realism into her stories in such a natural way. It makes me as a reader believe that magic is as real and normal as breathing. A lovely, lovely book about family, identity and being true to yourself.

I liked this book more than I thought I would, it's so subtly magical and the imagery is so warm and nice like drinking a pumpkin spice latte or hot coco sprinkled with cinnamon in front of a fire. It's a great read for a late fall/winter night. The story itself is cozy with loveable and memorable characters. The thing I like about this book is that the touch of magic is so soft that it feels like it could be real and the way Allen paints images in your mind makes you feel like you are living in the world of the Waverley's. It whisks you away for as long as you're flipping the pages.

I was honestly pretty disappointed in First Frost. I really loved Garden Spells so I had high hopes for the sequel. But this was so repetitive. It kept retelling the first book. I can't even count the number of times she used the words "first frost," and how often she referred to the "year everything changed." It all felt very forced. My favorite part was the fig and pepper bread recipe. I can't wait to try it, even though the book left out the amount of pepper to add (2 tsp).

GARDEN SPELLS is one of my all-time favourite books, and Sarah Addison Allen one of my favourite authors, but I approached FIRST FROST with some trepidation. GARDEN SPELLS felt so neat and complete that I didn't feel the need for a sequel, and if there's something that gets my goat it's unnecessary sequels.

I'm slightly converted - FIRST FROST wasn't necessary but it was a charming addition to the Waverley family story (I'd LOVE a prequel with young Grandma Mary and Emmanuelle though!). My usual Sarah Addison Allen complaint - it felt too short! And made me hungry! But other than that was perfect comfort-reading.
