A book that makes you want to go inside it and punch the character in the face. About nascisism, egotism and how a person can alienate itself by their own self aggrandizement.

Here lies a classic that I struggled through arduously.
I was personally shocked to find the Goodreads rating so high, BUT I think most people who read this are already fans of Dostoevsky (i.e., it's not a common introductory novel for him). SO, if you are already familiar with and enjoy Dostoevsky's writing style, especially his exploration of the political climate of Russia during his life, I would recommend this book.
I, however, was lost in and exhausted by the narrator's endless musings. I don't think you're supposed to "enjoy" this novel or the Underground Man as a character, which I didn't, but the lesson in it was lost on me because I was so over it after the first 30 pages. Upon reflection, I get it, but I didn't like it. I wish the whole of part one were sprinkled throughout the anecdotes of part two, as it would have made for a more readable and connected story, in my opinion.
This was only my second Dostoevsky, and I easily preferred White Nights to this. I favored the structured narrative, exuberant characters, descriptive writing, and a more optimistic, wistful, and complete ending.
If you can read this intensely philosophical and overly contemplative writing with ease, I envy you, but only a little bit.
