a cautionary tale disguised as the fictional(ish) diary of a total loser. i see my future and it's terrifying!!!
while the first part draws you in and creates this mutual understanding between the narrator and the reader, once the story starts unraveling in part two it hits you like a ton of bricks — leading you to question whether being the smartest in the room is truly worth it. feeling so seen throughout these pages is very comforting until you realize you're actually digging your own way down to the underground
despite the book being quite short some chapters in part two felt way too slow, hence the rating
i <3 you mr dostoyevsky please get out of my brain

book club collectively felt very meh about this. definitely some solid things to consider, but at what cost? reading the droning stream of consciousness of a miserable man followed by the narratives that invoke extreme second hand embarrassment is the ultimate cost
