I’m meant to lay in my hole (my bedroom) read books write notes and think about the beautiful and the sublime

Dostoevsky is one of the most brilliant authors and this book is no different. It’s so psychologically alive. The character, a bureaucrat, writes notes attempting to justify his life full of resentment and misery. The character is representative of a generation of which society formed, and is representative of all human nature to some degree. The book is so full of honesty, and you feel the mental paralysis that the underground man feels due to his overly acute consciousness. His suffering and hatred for mankind and rationality lead to his own oppression. Perfect ending.

Now..... I did not think this was poorly written. It is Dosteovsky, and I think the guy is incapable of doing poor work. I just didn't like it.

The Underground is a terrible place. Living there is a place of darkness. I cannot imagine how someone comes to dwell here. But this is a real place, and I think secular humanism leads to this place. This is the existential predicament of the modern man.

So, I am glad I read it. But it was not enjoyable.

This is a haunting book, an unsettling portrait of a pitiable man

That one page where Liza shows him the letter she kept to prove that she had once been loved… that shit got me. I guess as humans we’ve historically always kept things as proof that we loved or were loved. We are an interesting species.
