"…..if you come at four in the afternoon, I'll begin to be happy by three. The closer it gets to four, the happier I'll feel. By four I'll be all excited and worried; I'll discover what it costs to be happy! But if you come at any old time, l'll never know when to prepare my heart..."<br/><br/>“In one of those stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night. And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend...I shall not leave you.” i killed myself

As a child, I kept trying to read this but kept getting bored a couple pages in. Despite its simplicity and childish manner, this is not a book for children. Instead it is explicitly written as a reminder for adults to nurture their childish fascinations which died in the process of growing up. Told sweetly with the straightforward tone of a child who simply accepts the magic of the world as it is--no compromises or reasoning. Contrasting the very real perils of a plane crash with the little prince's outlandish concerns gives the adult some credit. Life IS hard, one cannot help but be jaded, but sometimes one is given the opportunity to appreciate the world anew. A rose, fox, star, and planet at a time. Between adult hardship and the little prince's fairylandia there is a spot for friendship, even more precious given its temporality. I did find the plants and the personified character traits a little trite (as a whole), but they illustrated their point well enough and had a nice absurdist angle I laughed at. The most compelling part of it all still is the adult's (Saint-Exupery's) love for the little prince (despite his initial annoyance and dismissal of his concerns), especially towards his death. I almost cried. Lovely little book overall, with the most charming watercolor illustrations and timeless tenderness.
First book I finished in French! It was a great read and definitely a must read for everyone

Got a sudden need to re read it, one of my most loved stories
A classic, a cute book with many layers I'm only starting to unpack :)
update from second read:
I enjoyed the book. Although I had read it before, it used to be a family favourite so I decided to read it again. Like last time, I wish I had the philosophical view of the story while reading it, it was a wonderful story but like all good books, I'm sure there was a message that was trying to be shared. I just was not in a state of catching it this time. Maybe next time!
