One of those lucky finds, just grabbed this off the library "new releases" shelf while picking up another book and... I may have found my favorite book of the year so far.

This is a story about the founding of Texas, and also about three people. Duncan Lemmons, a young man from Arkansas, leaves home to find a new life after his preacher father discovers him with another man. Cecelia, a slave from Virginia, tries again and again to escape her owners, moving from the master's house in Virginia down to the cotton fields in Louisiana. Finally, there's frontiersman Sam Fisk, who both of them will develop a strong bond with.

As Texas changes from a contested land of wilderness to a civilized corner of the United States, these three find themselves losing the freedom they have found far from the States; how will they keep it, and who will try to take it away from them?

I wanted to love this. There were some bits that were stunningly good, and I really appreciated the very small amount of sexual violence. But partway through, I started to realize how Cecelia seemed to struggle more than was reasonable and to make mistakes that weren't logical for her character to make. And then Duncan had nice a closing chapter rounding out his story and we heard nothing more from Cecelia, and I was very glad I was done with the book. The ending is fine, but not especially satisfying, and I don't feel like our characters were able to capitalize on the growth they experienced throughout the novel. I was hopeful about recommending this to folks, but I'm not sure that I can.
