I like the feeling of words doing
as they want to do and as they have to do.

[listened to the audiobook, before hopefully finding the hardback soon! leaving the rating off as finished but feel like I need to later this year read it in print for an honest rating.]

"The instant of nature / forming between them drained every drop from the walls of his life / leaving behind just ghosts / rustling like an old map. He had nothing to say to anyone. He felt loose and shiny. / He burned in the presence of his mother. / I hardly know you anymore, she said leaning against the doorway of his room. / It has rained suddenly at suppertime, / now sunset was startling drops at the window. Stale peace of old bedtimes / filled the room. Love does not / make me gentle or kind, thought Geryon... / 'How does distance look?' is a simple direct question. It extends from a spaceless / within to the edge / of what can be loved. It depends on light" (42-43).
Well, this is certainly one of the oddest things I've ever read. I am fond of Anne Carson, but sometimes it feels like she's just saying, "Look at how smart I am. See? I'm a Classics professor, remember? Anyways, better keep up." and maybe that just rubs me the wrong way. I'm not sure. This is such a captivating idea, modernizing the myth of Herakles and Geryon and making Geryon the sympathetic character, but I think I just got lost in the execution of it all. It felt like a fever dream (and maybe it's supposed to). The redeeming quality: passages of prose that leave you speechless because of their beauty or hint of existential revelation or glimpse into the shared human condition.
**TW: There are some forced sexual encounters in the text.**

This just does not work as an audiobook for me. Will read a physical copy or ebook at some point.

I could have sniffed my way through and left smiling
but
I sipped with deliberation
and
it went down well.

beautifully written and quite melancholic, but I wasn’t quite as moved as I thought I would be. I think my expectations were just too high.

I think I am too young yet for this book. I will come back to it.
