📚 Review: Anne Carson is such a beautiful writer. From the actual book to the essays at the beginning, Autobiography of Red was so lyrical and moving. This book has been on my TBR for a while, and after getting it for Christmas I was so excited to read it. A very short book that was so layered, yet accessible. The way she uses repetition and symbolism to weave this story with its context was so beautiful. Definitely recommend.

I am a philosopher of sandwiches, he decided. Things good on the inside.

Probably 4.5 stars as I sensed a lag towards the end, coinciding with the gloom of Lima. Who hasn’t felt such, been lost to such sullen conclusions?

I love Carson, all her omissions, the muttered half-truth in the sight lines of the Infinite. This work stirs myth, finds the lyrical in abuse, the frantic footfalls of childhood and the subsequent confusion commonly understood as “life”. I liked the universal experience of sitting in a cafe in a strange city and imagining everyone loathing you whereas you are barely a presence. Here’s to citing Heidegger on postcards back to the provinces. Indifference is the chief export of aging if not maturity. The existence of the letters is subject to debate, especially in learned journals. I tend to side with those that regard nostalgia as a toxic byproduct of capacity. Alas we can ponder the impact of volcanic activity as a metaphor for cognitive rehabituation.

The love I have for Anne Carson and her writing knows no bounds.
Probably one of the most masterful writers in English out there

Difficult book to listen to because of its dense, rewarding, ambitious sentences and the way it switched between styles and narratives. I suggest reading it instead!

It's so well regarded but this didn't resonate with me. I don't think writing it in verse really did anything for it and I'm kind of baffled by the depths that other reviewers see in it. Take my thoughts with a grain of salt though, I'm definitely in the minority.

Desgarrador retrato de soledad. Con cuánto dolor y fascinación me atraviesa.
