Tried very hard to find the words to review this book, but i think i can sum it up by saying that I wished it was longer and more complex, because the simplicity of the writing limited the story I feel like.

This is a strange and intense little book/poem/novella that was recommended to me by a colleague; it’s a good example of something I’d never have picked up on my own because I know no one else who has read it and it’s not really in any of my typical areas of interest or comfort. So, hooray for asking different folks for recommendations.
I’m not really sure how to characterize Carson’s masterpiece, which I’ve since learned is rather famous in some circles. A novella in verse? A homoerotic re-telling of the myth of Herakles and Geryon? A story about a disastrous first love? A part-translation, part-adaptation of an ancient text fragment? It’s all of those, but none of them do it justice. This book made my mind work hard and made me want to read more of Carson’s writing. It’s beautifully written and deeply felt. “Geryon’s whole body formed one arch of a cry—upcast to that custom, the human custom of wrong love.” It’s perfect sentences like this that make Autobiography of Red such a worthwhile challenge.
