What an interesting little book. It’s a head scratcher for sure and I’m not sure it was the ending I wanted, but regardless, there are some gorgeous gorgeous bits of writing in this, moments where i was moved to tears and into pensive thought. A book that spirals you inward into the chaotic mix of references that float around your head and leave you with a soft, sad expression on your face as you read.

Honestly, after sitting with it a bit longer I’m bumping this up to 4.5. And could possibly be a 5 when I revisit this book again someday.

I love the way she puts feelings of environments into tangible objects and words

I read this book probably five times in a row over the course of a few days or long train transit. Each reading the book got better- I uncovered more things and reached new depths.

“Most of those he interviewed for the science project had to admit they did not hear the cries of the roses
being burned alive in the noonday sun.”

love you anne carson i will always reread your books <3

Possibly the best book I've ever read, though I still feel that I missed a lot. I think I will go back and annotate my copy, which I almost never do. Really stunning poetry. Incredible narrative.

I listened to this as an audiobook. I wouldn’t suggest this. It’s pretty poetic and I kept finding myself a bit lost about what was happening. I hope to reread it on paper. When I was less confused, I could appreciate the fun narrative and style of story telling the author used.

Lovely, just the type of thing I like to read. Something that can inspire hours of research on tiny references and lots of thoughts/self-analysis. Plus, Greek mythology made anew.
