“How people get power over one another, this mystery.”
Incredible - I felt actual loss when I realized I had finished it. Anne Carson is brilliant, and I do not use that word lightly. She operates on levels that my measly brain can not achieve or fully comprehend. I have never read something that so contorted language and its ability to communicate in shades of meaning. I mean- “they were two superior eels at the bottom of the tank and they recognized each other like italics.” What. This defies genre and all expectations. It’s so beautiful and imaginative and deeply emotional. And once again, Carson can wield slippery words and language like Herakles’ club. Stunning.

i can't say that geryon is a character i've thought too much about. but isn't that what all greek mythology inspired poetry is about
I have to admit that I never would have read this book on my own. I am almost universally turned off by anything that is or involves mythology. However, I was really surprised by this book. I think that for me, reading things like The Odyssey was a labor intensive process without much payoff. But this book was so lyrically beautiful (and short) that it did give a tremendous payoff. In fact, I plan to go back to the book when I have more time and study the figurative language that Carson uses so that it will inform my own writing. I think such vivid language brings readers closer to writing, makes them enjoy it more and be more invested.
I also have to admit that I'm not always exciting by people who play with genre, but I also really liked this here. But I have a feeling that had a lot to do with the language as well. I think this book really taught me that with beautiful, vivid, cared-for language, a writer can do almost anything and succeed.

A lofty text that is rich with meaning, conveyed with simplicity.
Anne Carson’s book is the predecessor to every Greek retelling that has defined the late 2010s publishing scene.
Her interpretation is digestible, without speaking down to her readers and her multimodal approach combining tropes of classics with the modern world leaves so much to explore.
I will be thinking about this for a long time.

It might be because I waited too long to finish it, or it might be because I read so much poetry the last few months that I'm just poem'ed out, but I couldn't finish this.

Nothing wrong but I didn’t really get the point? Found myself having trouble following the plot/ remembering where/why things were happening. Maybe the audiobook did a disservice for my personal enjoyment of this type of book.
