This one took me a little bit to get into. I love poetry and I love Greek Mythology, but there was something about the writing that I couldn't get into right away. However, as I got deeper into this novel, I found myself being immersed more and more into the story and getting more and more invested as a result. I love the writing in hindsight and I love the characters. The way that Carson told this story was so interesting in the fullest sense of the word.

This is a book that is creative, beautiful and so unexpected. It is a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Geryon, written in verse. I can't wait to read it again.
It was raining on his face. He forgot for a moment that he was a brokenheart
then he remembered. Sick lurch
downward to Geryon trapped in his own bad apple. Each morning a shock
to return to the cut soul.
This was a surprisingly intimate read, as it was raining today as I read it, I'm a brokenheart, and I've been to both Buenos Aires and Lima. Anne Carson's ability to capture so much in so little is astonishing, and as much as this tore me raw, there was a level of comfort to be found in the familiar. We all have our own wings that we painfully tuck away, and we all love. I'll hold this one close.

this one felt like an expensive wine that tastes fine but I’m not getting the stone fruit and oakiness so it’s kind of wasted on me

I definitely did this book a disservice by reading it while extremely sleep deprived because the plot went almost completely over my head. For now, I'm going to leave it unrated, but I can see myself giving it a second chance sometime in the near future.
