I feel bad rating this so poorly since it’s so loved, but I just don’t get it, like at all. It’s all prose and philosophy and the story is dizzying. There’s some enjoyment to that, I guess, but it just left me confused and mildly frustrated.
This novel in verse probably deserves a five star rating, but there were simply some abstract parts that I didn't get. Overall, however, it's a great story illustrating the humanity of a "monster."
sparse, elegiac, beautiful. anne carson does it again! she continues to knock the wind out of me!
maybe it’s me, but it was really hard for me to get into this book. i liked the premise but the writing was difficult to follow
I referenced this book in all my scholarship and grad school applications but I actually didn’t finish it until now. It’s beautiful. Very poetic. Very philosophical. It has a lot of really nice lines. It does a good job of integrating the ancient into the present to show the universality of the human experience.
what can i even say? carson is a dizzying literary giant and reading her work is like being able to touch something incredibly tender and rare and lit-up that reaches out and touches you right back. it changes the shape of you
