The Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson

Is challenging.

I’m confused. This novel in poem form is so mixed in space and time, with Ancient Greek stories and modern interpretation. Some parts I found a complete write off, I had no idea what was happening. Other parts were clear as day.

The story follows Geryon, an interesting mythological creature that is red with wings and one of Hercules's labours, or at least he was in the Greek story. Is any of this real in this modern telling? Are the wings, his red colouring? Who knows? I don’t!

Anyways, it’s mostly a love story between Geryon and Herakles, and the result of their breakup, and running into each other again. There is also a large portion about Geryon’s family life.

To be honest, it’s sort of like understanding a dream once you've woken. It sort of makes sense as you read, like you're not missing a page or anything but also you kind of go “wait what?” I found I had to look up the myth a few times, and synopsis too. Which isn’t necessarily bad.

This book is for anyone who enjoys novelization poetry, and Anne Carson.

"The effort it took to pull himself away from Herakles' eyes could have been measured on the scale devised by Richter"

What i appreciate the most about this book is the reference material is included! I wasn't too confused when Anne's portion started because of this and truly got to enjoy the poetry of it all

I wonder if it would've been better to read visually rather than listen to as an audio book. I know it's written in verse and I feel like there was probably something in the way it was structured that doesn't translate to an audio format. Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed the story even if I didn't understand it as a dramatic reinvisioning of a classical myth.

A fantastically creative (and successful) experiment in literary form as well as a moving story with immense emotional depth, extremely lovable characters, and profound poetic beauty.

So good. I already want to read it again.

This book just became part of my DNA
