wait i loved this so much and i didn’t even know it was going to be depressed and gay

I found myself extremely lost for a large portion of this book. I felt attached to the main character, but everything else was difficult to get through. Luckily I read this book as part of my library's LGBTQ+ book club, and discussing it with other members made me understand and appreciate this book a whole lot more.
Autobiography of Red is in no way a bad book. If anything it's the kind of book that makes me feel like a bad reader. I think this is the kind of book that really benefits from being read in a class or as part of a book club so you can dive into all the nuances Carson packs into it.

read for my poetry II class (fall semester junior year)

‘Love does not make me gentle or kind, thought Geryon as he and his mother eyed each other from opposites shores of the light.’

Good soup

I was entranced! I love the poetics, the drama, the romance, the magical realism. I hate to give it only a three, but my star ratings hold weight, and while there are many things I loved, there were many things I felt were lacking, such as... ---> a comprehensible, clear plot, because, while it is described on the cover as a Novel in Verse, it is still a Novel, and it still could have been poetic while more clear. Poetry doesn't have to be super vague and confusing! I wanted more explanation of characters, more detail, more consistency with symbolism. The symbolism of volcano appears time to time, but why? This could have been developed more. And I understood it was supposed to be modeled after a Greek myth, but why? Geryon, the main character, has red wings, but why? And is he the only magical creature? It seems so. Anywho, I did love this book, and I loved how experimental it was. As a novel, so-so, but as opening my world to new possibilities of writing and reading, and unearthing and engaging with deep, sonorous feelings within my heart and soul, 10 out of 10!
