Waaay darker than my normal fare, but very enjoyable all the same. Not a time period you hear about a lot as an American, but one we should know more about. At first I didn’t think I was getting a grasp of the characters, but then slowly, they built - particularly Laura, who may be one of my favorite heroines in awhile. Will be keeping, would recommend.

Very much enjoyed this book. For one thing, it gave true depictions of events in World War 1 that I had never encountered, especially the Halifax explosion that occurred in 2017 when 2 ships collided in the harbor. This book starts right in at the action, and slowly reveals the mysterious nature of the hotelier who offers respite.

What struck me most about this book was the supernatural and the way it pertains to wars. There are many stories of "things" lurking about the edges of war, and why not? It brings out so many emotions and depths of hatred, and I think it often escalates our seeking out the paranormal in a desparate attempt to contact people who are gone one last time. But it makes sense that the violence would morh into something evil, that wants more.
