I'm not comfortable with the book's view of demons, though I have at least some faith in a writer this sensitive to try to complicate the black-and-white view offered in volumes 2-3. Beyond that, this was a bit weaker, but still not bad. There's a core of calm thoughtfulness to these that really helps it stand out from other adventure titles.

Strong start with the opening action. Great too see the badassery of Fern and Stark. I like the way the author showcases different forms of strength. Stark's stubborn resolve and literal strength. Fern's calmness and casting speed. And Frieren's cold anger and overwhelming power. I knew she was competent but it's the first time she's scary--I understand better why she's 'The Slayer'.

When the volume returns to the journey there's more meditations on longevity triggered when the party encounters another elf. What does it mean to exist in the world if there's no one to remember you? They specifically use the term 'praise' which feels odd so I wonder if it's a cultural thing.

This series is becoming one of my most look forward to fantasy series. Cant wait for the next one.
