It kills me to give this only three stars...

compared to other league novels this one felt short and rushed, probably because it was. The physical romance parts was glossed over, which annoyed me. These books have never shied away from sex scenes, but this one did because of the MM issue.

Maris' character was great as usual, and the extra back story we got was great but I felt like Ture was not fully developed as a character.

Honestly, I liked the story itself but it read more like a mid-series novella than a stand alone book. Nyk and Darling's books were longer, with more fanfare, more drama, etc. I just feel like Maris got jipped a bit.... however, he is still Maris and I love him! Even more now.

Now, this is M/M Sci-Fi Romance done right! Having read some of the Sci-Regency series by J.L. Langley and not enjoying it, I was rather dreading reading this installment. Thankfully, it was a very enjoyable read!

This book does overlap the events of [b:Born of Silence|12886599|Born of Silence (The League, #6)|Sherrilyn Kenyon|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1442842682s/12886599.jpg|14532721], so it is imperative that you read this series and book in order. While it does rehash those events a bit, it is told from a different point of view entirely, which makes it a bit fresher to read.

Characterization was great, and I was easily able to connect with both Maris and Ture. I enjoyed the fact that there wasn't a lot of sexual encounters in this book, and what there was focused more on a loving aspect rather than an intensely erotic one.

My only complaint is that this book ended abruptly and too soon! I would recommend this to fans of both the M/M and Sci-Fi Romance genres, and I'm looking forward to the next book!

There is a little more romance overall in this book than the world building I like about the league series. I'm also annoyed by the kindle only factor, since I have consumer rights issues with kindle in general. I didn't love the book, but it does seem that there are some important plot points for the series as a whole so I'm probably going to be glad that I read it when the next book in the series comes out.

3.5 Stars!!

One of the fiercest soldiers the Phrixians have ever produced, Maris Sulle has been an outsider the whole of his life. He grew up with a secret that cost him everything--his birthright, his family and his military career. In all his life, he's only had one love and he has sacrificed his own happiness to see his best friend reunited with the woman he loves. But now that his good deed is done, he feels lost and adrift. Even though they do their best to include him in their new family, he's once again on the outside looking in.

Ture has spent his life hiding from everyone around him while trying desperately to fit in. His family, the world, you name it. Badly hurt by everyone he's ever known, he trusts no one except his own best friend. And honestly, he can't understand why he trusts her. Nor can he believe her when she describes a loyalty between friends the likes of which he's never seen.

When he is in his darkest hour, he's saved by a hero he thought only existed in novels. A man who is every bit as scarred and mistrusting as he is. One who has no interest in being dragged into another relationship with anyone.

Having spent his life as a living study of doomed relationships, Maris is well aware of the courtship and fiasco that invariably follows. Still, there is something about Ture he can't resist. Something that won't let him walk away when he knows he should.

But when old enemies return to threaten them both, they either have to stand together or die alone.

Ok, so while I loved this story and the fact that we got a little more explanation on Maris's character, I was honestly the slightest bit...disappointed(?) Not sure that's the right word...I wanted Maris to get his story and I've been waiting for it from the beginning, but...

Issues: At the end of Born of Silence, it was already stated that Maris and Ture get together/get a HEA. This book is supposed to take place in the time between the last chapter and the epilogue of that book, but it feels a little off. I don't know, maybe it's just me? I also got really frustrated at both Maris and Ture's whole "I've been hurt and no one will do that to me again but I can't resist!" schtick. Yes, that's pretty much a standard plot line in 99.99999999% of romance novels, but it still grates. Especially because of their reasons for that line:
SpoilerMaris and his love for Darling and the fact that he'll literally drop everything and run the second Darling calls. Or Ture and his restaurant. Maris's I could understand a little where someone might get frustrated--but especially if Maris was completely up front about his feelings, and at least some if not all of his reasons, then they shouldn't have bothered getting jealous. Maris was upfront with Ture from the beginning: he said that he was in love with Darling and was loyal to him above pretty much everything else. Ture was ok with that. And really, he was, the only time he got any sort of annoyed/frustrated/whatever when it came to Darling's interrupting things. Ture and his restaurant, no one really has any right to get mad that he's trying to own and run his own business. If they can't handle it, that's their choice
.

I did like how Ture realized that Maris's feelings for Darling were there to stay and he didn't want to change that at all. All he wanted was a part of Maris that Darling wouldn't have. And he certainly started fighting for it when he realized what he wanted/had/didn't want to lose. I also loved his need to beat Maris for calling the one person who couldn't help him when in trouble. I really liked that about Ture--he knew that he loved Maris but he also knew that in a fight, Maris needed the people at his back who could protect him. That way he'd be able to come home to Ture.

Such an awesome book, loved reading it, these 2 were awesome, and we got to see some of the effects of the start of the war between the Sentella and the League, because it wasn't mentioned in the last chapter of Born of Silence for Darling and Z's offical in front of the nobles wedding! So loved this book, and we got to learn a lot about Maris, and his species, and his culture, because some things were a bit strange, and yeah, loved it!

My only negative feedback is that this needed more sex and better sex scenes.

I feel like Maris deserved so much more than this. He should have a totally epic romance like everyone else. Instead of this novella length story of his totally vanilla relationship with a chef which was set up by a friend. No offense to normal people, but this is The League and Sherrilyn Kenyon we are talking about! Plus, after Maris' lifelong devotion to Darling, I thought it would take so much more for him to fall in love with someone else. This was too rushed.

Plus, I didn't like how the book seemed to think that all gay men are effeminate. If Maris and Ture were both effeminate, fine. But it felt to me more like the book was actually trying to say that there are no other kind of gay men. It was weird, and annoying. Sadly, mm is not her forte.
