Just read this book for the first time as a 27 year old after just realizing it was a book. I was the same age as the main characters when the movie came out, and I was obsessed with it! The movie had much more detail. This was a cute book and I realize it’s for children, but I think it could have been a bit more detailed since the main characters were 12.

A very quick read, but it has that same beautiful lyricism of all Hoffman's work. I can't quite put my finger on it, but that last chapter is so lovely in its simplicity. God, I love Alice Hoffman.

The movie was maybe better then the book...Mostly because the book seems so short and, well, empty. If there were more descriptions and a more complicated plot, I'd like it a whole lot better. But the main idea is good, I just wish the author would expand on it.

Cute...but that's kind of it. May make a good read aloud, though.

Hoffman's Aquamarine leads readers into late summer with a story of friendship and coming of age. Full of symbolism that is both charmingly natural and obvious enough to be an excellent source for school papers, the short novel introduces readers to a world where mermaids are real and Claire and Hailey's friendship is about to face a big test. Hoffman gives her characters reasonably realistic agency, which is especially refreshing as many other novelists who might take on this story would prefer to focus on the tale's love story. Exciting and told with comfortable and cozy prose that feels like childhood summers, Aquamarine includes excellent lines such as, "...a mermaid love is more irrational than a jellyfish and more stubborn than a barnacle," and "He'd read so many books that he thought he knew how every story ended." A great read aloud for connecting with young readers or a great choice for independent readers, Aquamarine stands up to time seventeen years after its publication.

This was one of the movies I grew up on as a kid and so, naturally, I wanted to read the book. I read the book and it was awful. The movie was way better in my opinion.
