I liked the story. It felt a little bit rushed though. Maybe that was intentional to portray the race against time? All I know is that I wanted a little more. Maybe a bit more description?

"These girls had stopped looking at calendars. They didn't wear watches. They shut their eyes when the first star appeared in the sky.

This was a quick, cute read. I liked all of the sea imagery and I think it's a nice middle grade/YA tale about friendship (and mermaids! :) ). Obviously, the writing style is easier to understand, but it still has that bit of magical realism in it that I love. Alice Hoffman is one of my all time favourite authors, so I'm glad I could read it, as I'm slowly making my way through all of her books.

Alice Hoffman is becoming an acquired taste of mine. Her writing is probably a little out of my norm, but I am finding with each book by her I read, that I really enjoy her unique perspective on things. This wee little novella/short story was perfect in size, content, and style. All in all, this was a great little modern day fairy tale.

I think if I had to recommend this book at all, it would be to 2nd graders. Since I am older than a 2nd grader, I found this book dull and slow. I'd like to know how they made a movie out of this. Which, is the reason I picked this book up in the first place: the movie. While I have never seen this movie(and won't. It's now on my "I WON'T WATCH THIS IF MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT" list with "Sharknado".), I had heard of it, and the cover looked interesting(NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!!!), so I picked it up during English class, and finished it in English class. My personal outlook on the book is; the characters are underdeveloped, the parents play barely any roles except move the friends apart, the mermaid is very arrogant, and there's not enough characters.(I guess that's only technically the character outlook.)
However, the setting I love.(only thing I love about this book.) Lots of books make Maine sound so beautiful, so I really want to visit someday. Other than that, the book isn't my cup of tea/coffee/hot cocoa.

Basically, "Aquamarine" is a very short story where two girls realize their lives are changing: one is moving away, after both have lived beside each other for their entire lives, as best friends. This unwanted and unwelcome change coincides with the closing of the pool/park/cabana where they've enjoyed every summer together in their lives. A storm washes in, and a mermaid is left in the pool. What follows is a cute and deft discussion of change, realizing dreams, and growing beyond what you believed you could - or would - do in life. How Hoffman manages to layer so much emotional content into such short prose astounds me (and saddens me that I doubt I'll ever match that talent) but I'm sure this book would find a welcome niche in any young woman's bookshelf - especially those who aren't yet quite old enough to give up on magic.
