Me lancé a por este relato cuando acabé Drácula y sentí ese vacío existencial típico de cuando acabas algo que te ha encantado xD
También pensé que era la época idónea para leer vampiros y que era de lo poco que me quedaba (así clasicazo) por leer sobre estos seres.
El relato está genial escrito porque me ha hecho sentir una angustia horrible xD En El Vampiro nos presentan la figura del Vampiro como un ser inalcanzable, de belleza extrema y porte caballeresco de la alta sociedad; pero que no está interesado en esa vida. Quizás solo en cierta parte.
No me ha gustado más que Carmilla ni más que Drácula pero era imprescindible leerlo y saber qué toques dio Polidori a la figura del Vampiro. Siendo lo primero que se publicó en lengua inglesa sobre este tema =)

Me ha resultado muy interesante, sobre todo porque creo que es de las primeras historias de vampiros que se escribieron, si no me equivoco. Me ha gustado sobre todo cómo se representa el carácter del vampiro, como ese ser al que le gusta jugar con los humanos, demostrando una crueldad calculada.

How one man's disdain and envy led him to write a vampiric icon of gothic fiction and one of the most well loved and overdone chraracter tropes. Having his novella attributed to the very man he vilified probably sealed the deal for him.
I will never not think of this story without seeing Lord Byron in Lord Ruthven and Polidori in Aubrey.

No son pocos los que han criticado negativamente este cuento; tampoco los que, en varias biografías y estudios académicos, son algo renuentes a darle al joven médico el lugar que se merece en los anales de la literatura.
Sí, esta historia ameritaba una novela de mayor envergadura; sin embargo, si esto fue escrito "en tres ociosas mañanas", hay que tomar este texto como lo que es: UN BORRADOR que fue publicado (y sin su consentimiento). El autor quería pulir esta historia, pero las circunstancias que todos conocemos se lo impidieron.
Si un texto hecho solamente en tres mañanas marca un antes y un después en la historia de la literatura y en toda la cultura general, su mérito es enorme, sí o sí.
Para los que quieran leer una historia de vampiros sin tontos dramas cursis de adolescentes, cruda y que puedas leer de una sola sentada, dale una oportunidad. Esta historia muestra un ambiente, de manera sutil, corrupto y sucio, como su mismo vampiro.
Si Goethe, cuando creyó que esto lo había escrito Byron, dijo que era lo mejor que había escrito el Lord, por algo será.
Quizá el "hubiera" no existe, pero yo siempre insistiré esto: Polidori fue un autor que tenía mucho más potencial que el que logró demostrar en vida. Si las circunstancias le hubiesen permitido vivir más, quizá habría escrito más obras que le permitirían ser más valorado el día de hoy. No todos los autores logran realizar sus mejores obras jóvenes.

For its place as one of the earliest literary appearances of vampires (especially as creatures rooted to seduction) and for a relatively brief story, Polidori's story is curious enough and approachable. It moves quickly from scene to scene and leans heavily on the emotional responses of its impotent victim who can only watch the mayhem about him.
I found it interesting for its seemingly unironic acceptance of wealth and class as proper (along with a cringe-worthy condescending infatuation for a peasant girl because of her youth, beauty, and "innocence" from society); for the vampire who clearly does not discriminate; and for the frailty of its protagonist who places various corrupt social "virtues" above the lives of his friends.*Spoiler: You're not going to expose the vampire and save your sister because you made a promise to a vampire not to? Really?
Taken as a whole, though, this failing by the protagonist makes him almost entirely unsympathetic, and if I felt that he was thus a spoiled and naive every-aristocrat and Polidori was thereby passing some judgment upon the just purging of that class, I might be more interested. More, that failed sympathy is worsened by a story which rarely offers any dialogue at all, choosing instead to spend the great majority of its storytelling in summary. Months of deception and debauchery by the monster go by, for instance, in a few sentences; so do months of plots and schemes to thwart him.
Even so, the roots of the popular version of the legend are here exposed, and it is worth the time it takes to meet it. About an hour.

If this were an actual book about Aubrey trying to figure out the mystery behind his companion and then trying to stop him, it would be so much better. Instead, this short story was so small that it was forced to be nearly all narrating. I wish I could've known more about each of the characters!
