There's high chances you, like me, stumbled upon this book while searching for a worthy spiritual sequel to 'The Bridge over the Drina'... Well, while nearly not as epic in scale and scope it it's still a great book with fantastic writing and many of the elements that made many of us so dearly love Ivos' Magnum opus.

Spanning pre-annexation Bosnia through post world war I Serbia, this work is assertively gogolesque while still carrying vintage Andric story telling and immersion.

It's more of a traditional narrative, in the sense that it is centered on one protagonist but nonetheless it still manages to create an atmosphere soaked of Balkan turmoil even as the protagonist, herself, tries to distance herself from it (i'll just leave it at that).

The characterization is absolutely amazing, even for the most secondary of characters; and the narrative itself ends up dwelving, with sucess, in mystery and adventure.

All in all, it's not a magnificent force like 'The Bridge...' but it's still a brilliantly written work awash with historical ambience, political fervor and social strife, that will not disappoint the fans.

In the whole book I was not sure if I disliked or felt pity about the Rajka, the main character of the book. For sure I felt sad for her when she remembered the words of her father after being fooled. It is really interesting how her life is developed after the death of her father how his last words affects her life. It is also really interesting that it is mentioned some historical facts about WW I and how Belgrade changed after the end of it. In conclusion I felt it was nice book that I totally enjoyed.

Rajka is an unlikable character whose purpose is to show us how not to live, how extremes in behavior are detrimental to life and how selfishness and cheapskating are one of the worst characteristics one can have. Enjoy a little bit, you won't be taking your fortune with you.
