There's nothing thrilling about this YA thriller. The characters were flat and blurred together. The dialogue sounded forced and unrealistic. The storyline was predictable and bland.

SpoilerI don't get why everyone in the book gave MJ a free pass for creating the stupid video in the first place?? She's just as much to blame as the gossip site, if not more. Also, she was so obvious and annoying.

The only thing I found remotely interesting was how the book discusses technology being a double-edged sword but that's about it.

um. long story short, this book kinda infuriated me with how shallow some of the plot points were, and honestly, littman could’ve shortened the book down to the first and last part (the “now” sections) and it probably would’ve worked better as a short story. the twist about who the deepfaker was is just too predictable, and i really couldn’t care less about who ended up being the face behind “rumor has it.”

characters were boring, couldn’t find myself caring about them, which is really unfortunate because the book had potential with the premise — artificial intelligence & deep learning technology is super interesting, but it just felt like it was kinda thrown in to make the story more spicy?? i definitely feel like this idea had potential; the execution was just greatly flawed.

idk, just disappointed.

It was okay, but I knew from the beginning that it was MJ, but for different reasons. I thought that she did it because she liked Will and wanted to tank their relationship, but either way, who made it was still easy to figure out within the first chunk of the book.

I wasn't sure what to expect since the summary of this came off as a well-used trope, but I was happily surprised and engaged! It had like a modern Gossip Girl twist with a great range of characters and stories within the major story. I really liked it!

This book was so unbelievable it just wasn't interesting. And I don't mean the deepfake stuff--that part is obviously real. Just the friendships and the person who did the deepfake to begin with. The Rumor Has It site wasn't exactly as villainous as we were meant to believe. It wasn't the worst book I've ever read; it just wasn't very good.

Fun, light YA mystery. Just what I was in the mood for. Hand to readers who liked “One of Us is Lying.”

Dara and Will have spent the summer together and now that school is starting again, they've decided to keep their relationship a secret. Unfortunately, Rumor Has It, an anonymous school gossip website, has outed them to the rest of the school, which isn't so bad until the same website posts a video of Dara accusing Will of cheating on his SATs. Things deteriorate from there when nobody believes Dara when she tells them that she never said the things in the video. What is worse is now everybody believes that Will actually cheated, so an investigation into his actions may cause him to lose his acceptance to Stanford University. Will swears he didn't cheat, but a video is conclusive proof, or is it?

Deepfake examines the question of what is and what isn't fake news and how the public is supposed to tell the difference, a good theme and plot line for a story, however, the rest of Deepfake is a bit of a letdown. Dara and Will's relationship suffers the kind of damage that can result from accusations and trust issues and is portrayed realistically. The rest of the story just seems like add ons and fill ins to complete a book, as the other characters and problems in the story have no real emotional presence. By the end, the book seems a little preachy, making the whole thing fall a little flat. Overall, a good idea that could have been executed in a better way.
