Oh man. This book.

I've loved this series since I picked it up, there's just something so human about the characters that I appreciate, and this book takes that human element and cranks it up to 11.

None of these kids are perfect. They make mistakes all the time, and they aren't always the nice perfect heroes everyone expects them to be. But they are also trying so hard to grow and be better and fight for what they believe is right, and I love that. Aru in particular, because we spend so much time in her head, has had some really fantastic growth throughout the series.

This book focuses heavily on family. Blood family, found family, chosen family, and I am here for it. Aru's family is big and messy and there's a lot of secrets and things are not always black and white. But that's family. You don't always get along. Seeing her with Kara, and uncovering their connection was so gratifying. Both of them have only ever wanted families and here they are finding each other. And the reveal at the end? Heart wrenching.

The other thing that gripped me in this book was Aiden and Aru. They have been on such a slow burn that that simmering going on in this book was almost painful. It's been clear to me since the last book that Aiden feels something for Aru, even if she herself can't see it, and so to see him pulling away from her (for whatever reason) and Aru's belief that it's because he finds her repulsive, was so heartbreaking. I just want these two to be happy.

I'm really hoping the last book gives us satisfactory resolutions to these couples. Not just Aru and Aiden, but Rudy and Mini too. (Mini is a precious cinnamon roll and deserves only good things and I know I say this everytime but she is the best and I love her).

Anyway, now that I'm caught up, I can't wait for the next book. And sadly, this time I will have to.

These books are so fun, I keep forgetting how much I enjoy them until I read the next one. It was a fun ride with interesting plot developments. I do think the adventures aren't always that memorable, as it is a bit difficult to remember what happened in the last book when I pick up a new one, but once I'm back into the world it's easy to get invested quickly again. And Aru is a delightful main character you just have to root for.

I can't wait to see how the story wraps up in the final book!

Aru Shah and the City of Gold is the fourth book in the Pandava Quartet. So, I’m going to preface by saying, if you haven’t read the first three books, you shouldn’t read this review. But you can find my spoiler free review for the first book HERE. I won’t be summarizing this book because so many things happen and also because there is a convenient summary at the beginning of this post.
So, when this book starts, we’ve just met Aru’s sister, her biological sister. This huge twist was revealed in the end of the third book. We get to know her sister, Kara, as the book progresses. I think what I love most about this series is the Aru Shah is decidedly imperfect. She is flawed. She makes mistakes. She upsets her Pandava siblings. I loved this aspect of the story. Aru makes mistakes and she learns from them. We follow along as she makes amends for those mistakes and made sure to do better in the future. I also love the found family aspect of this story. We have the Pandava siblings, who all have the reincarnated souls of the original Pandava’s. They are some of my favorite siblings. I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to see more of the twins. I feel like because they’re so young, they’re held back from being a part of the quests that the siblings go on. I’m hopeful that we will see them participate more in the final book.
There are so many things I love about this series. The characters are the number one, but the mythology that we see in this story is fascinating for me. I didn’t know much about Hindu mythology, so I really enjoyed learning all about the well-known figures.
Overall, I loved this book just as much as I’ve loved all the previous books. I think the mythology and the world is so much fun. It’s exciting and full of adventure. The characters are incredibly easy to love and you can’t help but root for them. I also have to say that Chokshi’s writing always stands out and this book is no different. I highly recommend this series.

AHHH SO GOOD!!! I enjoyed every single moment of this book so much! The plot was so engaging, the character development was incredible
SpoilerAIDEN AND ARU’S KISS I CANT EVEN I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
, and the writing was as amazing as ever. After that
Spoilercliffhanger
ending, I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT AWAYYY. The only issue I had was that the ending
Spoilerwith Kara being Karna’s reincarnation and betraying the Potatoes
was predictable, but that’s most likely only because I’m familiar with Hindu mythology. Overall, an awesome read that I devoured!
